Albums You Can Listen to All the Way Through

djklambakedjklambake Posts: 2,522
A few days ago, after realizing that I had listened to White Blood Cells by the White Stripes all the way through three times in one day, I started thinking about other albums that I can certainly listen to all the way through. I thought that it would only be maybe a handful including Avocado by Pearl Jam and Alligator by the National, but I did a little inventory and here are the albums I adore and can and will listen to all the way through:

The National - Trouble Will Find Me

The National - Alligator

The White Stripes - White Blood Cells

Lord Huron - Lonesome Dreams

The Hold Steady - Boys & Girls in America

Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam

Lifehouse - No Name Face

Japandroids - Celebration Rock

Taking Back Sunday - Louder Now

Rogue Wave - Descended Like Vultures

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand

Foo Fighters - Foo Fighters

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend - Contra

Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom

Soul Coughing - El Oso

Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming

Dave Matthews Band - Crash

Immoor - The Thievery of Your Own Things

Death Cab for Cutie - Plans

Radiohead - OK Computer

John Mayer - Room for Squares

John Mayer - Heavier Things

Coheed and Cambria - The Second Stage Turbine Blade

Coldplay - Parachutes

Kings of Leon - Because of the Times

Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire

Whatchu got, Jammers?

I listen to pretty much all of my albums all the way through. I wouldn't buy a record or a digital album if I didn't want to do that. It's beauty of vinyl. :) If I didn't want to listen to a whole album I'd just download the individual song(s) that I like and put it on my mp3 player.

Kind of feels like a double post because I just wrote about them but I have to say it- I listened to Green Day's "Insomnia" all the way through three times today and never once was even tempted to hit the skip button. :-)

    Nirvana- Nevermind
    Nirvana- In Utero
    Pearl Jam- Ten
QOTSA-...Like Clockwork (I've listened to this one straight through 3 times at work today already)

These are the only 4 where I never skip a single song. A lot of PJ's albums are close to perfect for me, but there's always one/two songs that I can't stand (WMA for example keeps VS off this list).

They were the first band we saw at Coachella this year, and if the Front Bottoms were the ONLY band we saw there this year, I would have been satisfied. I love that band.

Really not much these days, as it's mostly accessed not via a tangible source.

    If it were?

Pretty much anything Beatles, especially their later albums.

My reaction when I read this question:

    image

"Doesn't people listen to the whole album anymore?" was the question I had to ask myself.

Personally I never listen to a song here and there. When I listen to music I always listen to an album as it was intended from the artist: from the first to the last track.
No other way in my book.

    Crazy Jack- love it!

I mostly agree. I love the whole concept of an album as a whole, a unit, a creative entity.

Yet, sometimes I do want to experience a song isolated. I started doing that seriously when I read about how R. Crumb only collects old blues 78 RPM singles because a) he likes that kind of music and b) because when he puts on that one song it becomes his entire focus- kind of like it's the one thing happening in his world for those minutes.

Either way, when I listen to music, it gets my full attention. The only time I listen and do other things is when I drive and I mostly drive on automatic pilot anyway so look out!
