looking out

It was lucky that as I backed out of the garage I noticed the glistening puddle. The sparkle went straight to my heart and woke up my joy for living in this warm climate and for being outside in the morning. I opened the windows of the car to feel the day begin. At the right time of morning, there’s a white mist, a cool temperature, and the plants seem to be singing in the dew. It was the best time to be out in it! Even if it was just a trip to work, I wanted to feel connected to the trees and hear the birds on the way. Eyes open, I was focused outward to pay attention to what was around me.

At the stop light, there was a beautiful red car next to me. Inside of it was a woman in the typical dropped-head posture of someone focused on a smart phone. So distracted by her lap! I wondered if the driver would notice when the light changed or whether there’d be some lagtime and the person behind would have to honk.(Fortunately, I wasn’t in her lane behind her and it wouldn’t be up to me to do that!)

How often I see that happen in my town’s traffic these days. People dividing their time between looking at the road and reading the small screen in their lap! I wonder if eventually these drivers will be left behind in life as well as on the road? Sitting there, distracted, not moving even though all the other cars have traveled on!
