IMMORTALITY

Vacate is the word...vengeance has no place on me or her
Cannot find the comfort in this world
Artificial tear...vessel stabbed...next up, volunteers
Vulnerable, wisdom can't adhere...
A truant finds home...and a wish to hold on...
But there's a trapdoor in the sun...

Immortality...

As privileged as a whore...victims in demand for public show
Swept out through the cracks beneath the door
Holier than thou, how?
Surrendered...executed anyhow
Scrawl dissolved, cigar box on the floor...
A truant finds home...and a wish to hold on too...
He saw the trapdoor in the sun...

I cannot stop the thought...I'm running in the dark...
Coming up a which way sign...all good truants must decide...
Oh, stripped and sold, mom...auctioned forearm...
And whiskers in the sink...
Truants move on...cannot stay long
Some die just to live...
Ohh...

I'll never believe that this song isn't about Kurt despite what anyone tells me.

Based off the lyrics it would be harder to contest that it isn't about KC.

    Wind this thing up.

100% agree. Some day I think Ed will admit it.

Ed said it was about someone riding a parallel train - or something along those words.

It is so biographically accurate to Kurt's story that for me it must be about him. It is a top 5 song for me and one of absolute genius. I mean musically it is a very simple song to play, the melody doesn't stretch Ed's vocals and allows him to focus on the narrative with great sombre emotion and Mike's solo is just brilliant. Lyrically is what makes it such a standout though and I believe Ed has been quoted as saying there are no references to Kurt on Vitalogy which to me is not believable in the slightest. I think it contains many. He said that he wouldn't want it to seem like exploitation. I understand that statement but at the same time I don't believe anyone would accuse Ed of this in light of Kurt's death. I almost feel the song places you into his shoes and writes an explanation for his suicide that is in black and white and less meandering and self pitiful than what he actually penned himself. Ed was pretty fragile around that time and had his own issues and I always thought that the song maybe came easily for him lyrically because he had a close understanding of Kurt's fragility under the spotlight of media. Obviously nobody could do anything other than speculate what illness and addiction was doing to him. I'd love Ed to admit someday that he did actually write the lyrics about him and maybe appreciate what a piece of genius it is that he tackled a heavy subject in such a dignified manner.

The self-pollution radio performance is absolutely every reason I pick up a guitar & search for that sound Mike has on his solo.

Most certainly about KC. Reads like a cautionary note to the youth who admired KC at the time.....maybe it says nothing will ever be what it is today and to move on, you will grow past this tragic event and the memories will become immortal...not necessarily that KC will be Immortal? I don't know but again this is EV and PJ at its best!

That is absolutely brilliant analysis right there.

Great song indeed. I feel Vitalogy would have greatly benefited with them axing Sexy Mop and just ending the album wth Immortality and then followed by Aye Davanita to close it out.

    Better versions than 1998 are:
    2000 Toronto

    2006 Adelaide
    2008 Hartford

1995 immortality live is in a category of it's own (in my humble opinion) because almost every night of the us 1995 tour Mike was hitting the whah wha pedal in his solo with tons of echo like a psychedelic madman !

I've heard all of those except Adelaide, and I was at Hartford...

And I still say Melbourne 98 wins.

That additional intro EV uses also adds an extra special element to the song even though it's very subtle. He's done this many times (as I am sure all of you know) including three of my favourite performances of the song: Toronto 2000, Cleveland 2006, and Berlin 2012 (as well as Buffalo and Hartford 2013).

I am so glad I finally got this one live in OKC 2013! I think of my 3 shows on the Lightning bolt tour I enjoyed OKC the most, but they were all great.
I also love the self pollution radio 95 version. :)

One of the Japan shows from 03 has a version of immortality that is eight minutes long.

Nagoya, but that only counts if you include the intro ambient jam. Needs an asterisk.
