Can I get anyone's opinion on whether or not this would be considered a "small, handheld" camera? It's not professional, no detachable lenses or anything.

I brought this camera into both T.O. shows and the Palace show.

Here's what I did. You may or may not have all of these options on your specific camera.
1. Turn off the flash. If your camera thinks you are taking a picture of something close enough for the flash to make a difference it will come out really dark. I saw a few people in the rows in front of me taking flash photos with their digital cameras and I could see on their screens that all they were getting were perfectly exposed shots of the top of the heads of the people in front of them.
2. Set the ISO speed as high as it will go. On my camera it is 800. The higher the ISO speed the faster your shutter speed will be. This means less blur.
3. Set the focus to infinity (on some cameras it is an icon of a mountain) and turn off any focus light or lasers. Unless you are in the first 10 rows or so everything will be in focus at infinity.
My camera was in "P" mode. Since the focus was locked at infinity all my camera had to do was set the exposure. I always held the camera with 2 hands and I took multiple shots of each thing that I thought was interesting. Out of the 303 shots I took there were about 60 really good ones. Sometimes the camera would set the exposure but right as I clicked the shutter the lights would get brighter or darker. So those shots didn't come out. Or sometimes I didn't hold the camera steady enough or sometimes the band member was moving too much.
So shoot a lot and you are bound to get some gems!

Since its been asked.
I shot with a Canon A620 7mpx camera. To whoever asked about that camera being OK (not pro), you'd have been fine in Cleveland and Chicago.
I shot in Manual Mode. Camera only goes to ISO 400, which is noisy. So I shot ISO 200 at no less than 1/30 of a second. Which never worked to well, actually. I shot most of them at 1/60th second with the aperature as wide open as possible. It has a 4x (141mm relative) lens, so the aperature was usually 4.1. Not really that good. Almost all my shots were underexposed by at least 2 stops according to the camer. But you can see that they are OK for the most part.
The biggest problem underexposing digital shots is the noise that shows up when you try to 'fix' them.
My recommendation is this- shoot as wide open as possible, and at 1/60th or 1/30th depending on where you are, what you want, and how good you are at standing still. Then factor in if the subject is standing still.
If you gots the skills and are close, spot meter and then wait for the lighting conditions to return. I focused a few times and then just waited for the lights to brighten up. I actually have some really overexposed stuff too.
