Global Warming concerns taken too far?

In this case, my answer is a strong "Yes". McPherson's predictions of human extinction by the year 2030 are getting a lot of air time on the internet and I for one find his approach strongly off-putting (to put it nicely). Some quick fact checking shows that his predictions are way over-blown. I'm not saying human extinction by 2030 isn't possible. That could happen anytime for a number of reasons (nuclear war, giant meteor strike, etc.), but as a result of global warming? Not likely. What really puts me off about McPherson saying these things is that his kind of thinking leads many people to even more irresponsible over-use of resources because they expect we'll all die anyway, to people unnecessarily losing hope and to inaction when what we really need to do right now is to take strong action to slow climate change because we are, indeed, going to have to deal with some of the consequences of our affect on climate and environment.
But this is a fairly intelligent group here. I don't see many of you falling for this guy's über -doom thinking.
