Widespread Panic

Looking to get into some new music and Widespread Panic is a band I keep hearing about. I know nothing about this band .. can anyone recommend a few live shows from LIVEDOWNLOADS.COM ?

Night of joy is good. I really, really like über cobra. It's an all acoustic live set. Even if you're not a panic fan, I think you will appreciate this album. They don't do any extended jams on this album (I like panic, but one complaint I have is sometimes they jam too long during their shows). They do a nice cover of Neil Yong's walk on...

    Excellent album!

For live stuff, I'd start with Live in the Classic City

I'd skip the studio stuff entirely, at least in the beginning. Much like PJ, Panic is an exceptionally amazing live band. Like doujo said, Live in the Classic City is a good start.

They have an Archival Series of full shows. The one from Huntsville in 1996 is a favorite of mine.

I'm planning to go to the Philly show. It's on 6/14 btw and goes on sale this Friday at 10 am.

Check out http://panicstream.com as well. They typically stream Panic shows live (they play Richmond this Thursday/Friday/Saturday). They also have tons of past shows there that you can listen to for free.

Widespread is the only band I have seen more times than PJ. They are amazing live. Those of you above that haven't seen them yet but have been listening for a long time, don't miss them when they come near you. All of the above recommendations are great. If I could add some personal recs. I was at their 2006 Halloween show. Of the shows I've seen I would recommend that one. The first Airplane since Mikey died, awesome covers (Radar Love, She's So Heavy and a few others), just a great show. I was there the night before at Vegoose too. That was also an awesome set. Since they don't repeat songs within three shows of eachother you won't hear a repeat during those two at all.
Everyday is also my favorite studio effort but a close second is Til the Medicine Takes and then Space Wrangler. Check those out too.

Has anybody picked up any of their first 4 studio album reissues on vinyl? I ordered Space Wrangler and Self-Titled from eBay (since no local record store in AZ stocked them). They shipped yesterday so I am impatiently waiting. Can't wait to hear Driving Song in particular. Anyway, anybody else out there get these?

I have also been listening to Panic for a long time. My older step brother turned me on to them in the early 90's. All of their early CD's are awesome...every song! They have a huge following down here in the South East. Two of the best shows I have ever seen were the 2005 New Years shows in Atlanta. The 2nd show is on YouTube but there is no volume...amazing show! I also saw them in 95 I believe at Washington & Lee Univeristy and there might have been 1000 people there. I had backstage passes to that show but they wouldn't let us backstage until the show was over and my high school football coach got a call while we were driving up that he hD to give a homecoming speech the next day and so he told us we were driving back home after the 1st set. My buddy and I were crushed...but we were sophomores in high school...I am sure we would have been idiots. My step dad used to own a bar in Wilmington NC and he booked Panic in 94 as a favor to their manager. He asked me one time when I was in 8th-9th grade who I was listening to and when I told him Widespread he starting laughing. He said they got so fucked up playing his place his bartenders said they weren't any good...well they're still around and still kicking ass just like PJ.
