I'm new to guitar and am looking for a good acoustic at a reasonable price. I saw this one and really like it. And I'm partial to mahogany so that's a plus. Can anyone tell me if its a solid choice or give me some other recommendations. Right now I have an Alvarez acoustic which sounds great but isn't as playable as I'd like (higher action) and I don't want to put a lot of money into having it worked on. Thanks!

  • A luthier can probably set it up for less than 100, including a bone nut and saddle. Acoustics are all about if you like the sound. Any mahogany (top, sides, back) is going to have a deeper/darker/bassier tone. If that's what you are looking for, go for it. But just remember if you are ever planning to play mic'd or use an acoustic pickup, it's much easier to add bass through EQ than to take out. That's my experience anyways. I own a DC-15ME (mahogany cutaway).

Thanks. I hadn't looked at the cutaway. Looks sharp!

  • Cutaways are awesome if you have a need for them. Do you own an electric yet? Because for the same price you are willing to spend on a new acoustic, you can get a nice MIM strat and a little tube amp and completely open your world of learning guitar up. Only reason I ask is because you said you were new to guitar.

I don't have one yet. Haven't even played one. Im enjoying learning on the acoustic for now. My brother in law has an acoustic electric cutaway which is fun to play so I'm going to check yours out for sure.

A few years ago I bought a Martin DX1R new for around $500. Relatively cheap, Martin quality, great sound for the money, comfortable to play, and not something I'm afraid to take places. And good resale value- not that that matters except maybe for whomever inherits it.
