Thought it was awful. So obvious they weren't playing and I find that inauthenticity as bad as lip synching. I like that they were chosen to play but just wish they were really playing.

  • Its true whats the point of being there if your not actually playing? it is pretty much the same as lip synching

Non issue for me. If they wanted to perform during this half time then they had no choice but to do as asked.
    Alright, alright, alright!

they could of walked away from it and explained why afterwards. I would of felt better about that they only played for 2 mins anyways.

  • I understand the explanation Flea gave for why they didn't play, but if the NFL cannot accommodate a live band then why ask one to perform. They should just stick to pop singers who don't need a backing band and can dance and sing live to a pre-recorded track. No one really expects those people to have a full band behind them and as long as they are singing live then that should be enough for this type of performance.

I must be missing something... don't almost all Superbowl acts, except maybe Bruce Springsteen, lip synch? I'm pretty sure Madonna was, wasn't she? What is the big deal? I'd rather the RHCPs make it clear to the world that they're not playing than play along as if they are. Being there and playing unplugged is a bigger statement to me than not showing up and letting someone else lip synch.

Am I missing something and do most superbowl halftime acts actually perform live?

They didn't lip sync, just had prerecorded music.

  • They didnt make it clear untill other people started talking about it. Were talking about a pretty huge band here. A band whos made it to the rock n roll hall of fame your telling me they couldnt pull it off. I agree maybe superbowl shouldnt have live rock bands there anymore if thats the case

Nothing is bigger than the Super Bowl right now so everything and everyone must fall in line that night.

  • Everything could still fall in line if they did it live. Pearl jam could do it perfectly. We all know that.

People are making this a bigger deal than what it is. Who cares, most bands that play the Super Bowl sing to pre-recorded music, as was already mentioned.

Dont think Pearl Jam would do it. Do you?

It's not whether they could or not. The NFL will not let them. Like Flea said, it's a huge event and there are too many things that could happen.

Exactly, and it's not like they can't play live. The vocals were live at least.

  • Just seems lame thats all

I'd prefer they play live, but it's a nonissue to me. Theyve proven themselves as players for a few decades. Keeps the show from having the standard tv performance shitty sound.

I thought it was common knowledge that almost everything is prerecorded during the SB.

I think RHCP made it clear that they weren't actually playing, to virtually anybody that's ever seen a live music performance.

Would PJ do it? They will never be asked. If by some fluke they are asked, they'll gladly mime along just like all the other bands have, and Mike will look as silly as the RHCP guitarist flailing around to a prerecorded track.

Since it's modern RHCP, no surprise that this message board is almost totally against it. Feels like another chance to pile on the hate.
  • I still like the RHCP I just think live would of been a better choice its what I enjoy

i didn't know that performers were ALLOWED to play live at halftime. I know with the national anthem they require that you record it a week before just in case you get sick but even then some performers use it anyway (Whitney Houston was lip synching)

I don't know.. It's like why even play then? If everybody's going to lip synch and fake, then what's the point?
