Thoughts on Mudhoney!!

I think there awesome and so does my brother. But everyone else I know mainly thinks there no good or are not a fan of Mark Arm. I'd like to hear the Pearl Jam worlds thoughts on the great Mudhoney.

  • At one time... they were the shit.

I think they're pretty good: overrated at one point in their carer and underrated at this point in their career.

What album would be best to start with to get a whole overview? If they don't have a greatest hits, which would be a good starting point? I have the cooter stew ep (don't know the full name as I am not at home). I like it though, so for a full album what would be recommended? Thanks guys.

They're one of those bands that I want to like but can't get into their sound. I've yet to have a Mudhoney moment where I needed to seek out and play one of their albums.

They are the Johnny Drama to Pearl Jam's Vinnie Chase. Safe to say they wouldn't be playing many arenas or amphitheatres without the success of PJ.

No problem. When I am in the mood I dig me some Mudhoney. I've sort of lost track of them over the past decade or so, but I have most of their albums before that and they all have some great tunes on them.

My fav album is My Brother the Cow. I had only heard a handful of their songs before they performed three songs on PJ's Self Pollution radio broadcast (Judgement, Rage, Retribution and Thyme, Generation Spokesmodel, and What Moves the Heart)....
Those three songs (esp JRR&T and GS) made me buy the album.....other standouts are Into Yer Schtick and FDK (Fearless Doctor Killers).....some of these tunes blend the 'grunge sound' with hardcore punk brilliantly.
I met Mark Arm and STeve Turner after their club show here in Edmonton (at which EV did a guest spot - met him too!), in the alley while loading their van themselves....they seemed genuinely surprised that I asked for autographs lol....good guys, really gracious.
I went back in their catalogue from there....I like Piece of Cake, EGBDF, and the ST album quite a bit as well, but never got into Tomorrow Hit Today and kinda stopped following them after that.

I saw them recently and they shredded! So tight and their guitar sound blew my mind. I think Since We've Become Translucent and The Lucky Ones are their best records by far. I can't revisit their early stuff except EGBDF oddly, but I love what they are up to nowadays.

I don't have any of their albums, but I really like them. Mark Arm is an animal on the stage - so much engery, it's contagious! I have seen them open several times for PJ and last year in a small club in Detroit. It was awesome! Try to see them live if you can :)

Seeing them live ruined their music for me. I think they sound awful live and really lack stage presence. The last I saw them time Mark Arm decided to act like a deranged frozen zombie for long stretches of time. It was really stupid. I hope I am never forced to get through a set of theirs at a Pearl Jam show again. Had to see them twice within 14 months. Terrible opener.

I do like a few of their recorded songs though. If I'd never seen them live i would like them a lot more (interesting how I feel the exact opposite of how you feel Leeze, lol). To be fair, I just don't think they can pull off stadium performances. They absolutely should not be opening for PJ. They just are not that kind of band and never will be. They need to stick to small venues for sure. Also, they do seem like good guys. They just can't carry a stadium and should stop trying to (who's gonna turn down opening for PJ though? That would be nuts).

*scratches head* pj has quite often had bands like mudhoney open for them (iggy, buzzcocks, s/k, fastbacks...)

what kinds of bands do you think should be opening for them?

i thought mudhoney kicked ass when i saw them in hamilton. i don't love all of their songs, but they put on a good show.

did you see me? i saw you.

You could always start with their Best Of cd, "March To Fuzz", it'll give you a pretty good overview of their brand of noise. Otherwise Superfuzz Bigmuff is pretty much essential listening IMO.

Personally whenever I hear conversations or see threads comparing the best grunge/Seattle bands I always try to get Mudhoney in there. I love their energy, their attitude, the way I want to scream whenever I hear Touch Me I'm Sick...

I also think their sound typifies 'grunge' and the 'Seattle sound' (or any other cliché that gets thrown around) more than the bands that usually get mentioned (PJ, Alice In Chains, post-Bleach Nirvana, STP are usually the top 4 that people talk about)
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)
  • I love them personally.... This is a great live set.

All the "seminal" alternative/grunge/punk bands that I've seen open for PJ have been awful. Shame PJ thinks they have to do favors for these horrible sounding bands....Sonic Youth, Bad Religion, Mudhoney...some of the worst musical experiences of my life.

I wonder if the younger bands feel like they have something to prove, b/c my experience with those bands(Band of Horses, Sparta, Idlewild) has been much more positive.

Everyone from Mudhoneys pretty talented. Clearly Pearl Jam can see that. There also one of the first grunge bands. Before Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Mudhoney was a big influence on Nirvana and alot of other bands out there. They got a awesome sound. Listen again. Also Mudhoneys used to smaller venues they sound alot better there
