Russia is following up its effort to build a peaceful and better world in the Olympic Spirit with a full scale military invasion of a neighboring country. Go figure.

From the last article Byrnzie posted:

The breakup of Ukraine would not be a purely Ukrainian affair. Along with China's emerging challenge to US domination of east Asia, the Ukrainian faultine has the potential to draw in outside powers and lead to a strategic clash. Only Ukrainians can overcome this crisis. Continuing outside interference is both provocative and dangerous.

    Makes sense to me.

    A link would be helpful.

I read some of what I found on Roberts and his severe warnings about nuclear war and what he says raises concerns. I have to say though, living through the duck and cover 50's, the Cold War, the collapse of the USSR and more current events, when I read about nuclear annihilation I go into a blank stare and slip into a state of catatonia. The world has been on the brink of a nuclear holocaust all of my 62 plus years. That's a long time waiting to be vaporized. On a brighter note, how nice that we have avoided this "one time and out" scenario for so many years. I wish us continued good luck that way.

Excuse me, it's time for a stiff drink.

President Putin is denying that Russian troops are in the ground in Crimea. He's claiming that local militias are involved instead. He also says that should Russian troops intervene in Ukraine, "it will be legitimate."
I don't know what that means, but it makes me wonder if he's as delusional as Saddam Hussein or is he a political mastermind with a grand plan to make the US and the world his bitch?

He can do whatever he wants and he knows it. Ukraine isn't in NATO so the west can't do crap. The precedent was set in Syria in how the west interacts in a non-NATO state that has russian interest involved. Our entire military was a stone's throw from Syria and he won.

Due to the cold war, Russia doesn't rely on the rest of the world and are content with controlling the eastern block ... so he's not going to let an asset simply slip out of his control. Especially a region he probably views as russian soil anyways. Dude is old school KGB.

An address by the command of the Sevastopol brigade of surface ships, and the crews of the Ukrainian Navy ships Slavutych and Ternopil to the international media:

We, sailors of the Ukrainian Navy, have listened attentively to the position and thoughts of the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, which he delivered during a news conference in Moscow on 4 March 2014.

Speaking to a Reuters journalist, the Russian president subtly displayed the skills of a diplomat in avoiding answering questions. But we are military people and, as it is known, we tend to speak and act directly, after diplomats exhaust their mutual arguments.

Proceeding from this, we think that we have the right to accuse the president of the Russian Federation of a baldfaced lie. A lie that concerns the direct participation of the Russian Armed Forces in the events which have been unfolding on the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol over the last few days and today too.

The Ukrainian Navy warships Ternopil and Slavutych, which are moored in Sevastopol Bay, are currently blocked by warships and vessels of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, and they are all carrying detachments of marines numbering up to a platoon. They are armed with automatic weapons and equipped accordingly.

Bearing in mind the remarks of Mr. Putin that such gear and equipment can be bought in any shop, we would like to seize the moment and ask which shop – as well as where one can purchase automatic weapons, pistols and grenade launchers in violation of Ukrainian legislation? We also would like to recall that no unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces deployed in Crimea gave up even a single inch of the territory of their military bases or the weapons entrusted to them, let alone in such quantity, as all units remained faithful to the call of duty and their oath to the Ukrainian nation.

In response to all these insinuations, and the flows of mendacious information disseminated by dirty politicos and corrupt journalists, we – officers, warrant officers and sailors of the Ukrainian Navy – openly declare that we will honestly carry out our soldier’s duty till the end, we will defend our country and the Ukrainian people as we have been doing through all the years of independence, not for the sake of posts or salaries, but because this is our land and we cherish the lives of every person who lives on this land regardless of nationality.

Personnel of the brigade of surface ships,

    4 March 2014

What a novel idea if this is true ... holding a referendum and asking the people what they want ... seems like a reasonable solution

Crimean parliament votes to join Russia, hold referendum in 10 days on ratifying

Let me get this right Putin is backing the democratically elected government and the west is backing the rebels, Putin supports the referendum, and referendums are the ultimate in democracy, and the west says the referendum is illegal .... hmmmm.

Yeah, the whole thing is confusing. We in the US can't even untangle our own wadded up webs of confusion so all the more reason to stay out of someone else's.

I would like to add to this discussion that this is not just an Ukranian affair. We are talking about a breach of international law, gaslines, Western interests, a real threat to the European Union; there are Russian ethnic minorities in Hungary, Poland, Romania - all part of the European Union today. We have a leader in Russian that has stated that he wants Russia to restore itself to its fromer SU glory. This is not Western propaganda. The Crime has been a political firezone for 1.5 centuries. We had Crimean wars in the 19th century, which were a prelude to the first WW. Keep in mind that two of the major wars of the last century started in Europe. Even though things seem to settle now; you only need a spark to create a great, great fire. Lets not forget that impeachment politics can do more harm in the long run. Diplomatic solution is at this moment the only way forward. But thinking that this had nothing to do with the US, is keeping the Real Politik of international politics out of the the equation.

Putin is not backing any democratic elected government. There is almost no democrartic governement in the whole Russian Federation. (Republic of Georgia and White Russia anyone?) Russia is as democratic as China is. He is creating puppit governments for his own national interests. The riots in Kiev were peacefull and against a government that was pro-Russian through an election that was (officiallyby the UN considered) faulted to begin with. In other words: the government that was overthrown by "rebels" (democracy means the right to demonstrate) was highly influenced and set up by Russia. The government was corrupt (that has been proven) and supported financially by Russia for its own gain. By having the Ukraine in the federation, especially the Crime, is having your hands of the gasepipes and other resources that go to Europe. Keep a close eye on the propaganda that is coming from Russia to the Crime. (That Western Ukraine are "fascist"; a very powerful symbol in the former Soviet Union and the people living in the Federation; any liberal is by some considered a "fascist".) Also keep a close eye on the minorities in the Crime (like the Tar) and the history of the Ukrain as a whole; it is an highly ethnic diverse country where the West used to be part of the Austrian Empire.

There can be no referendum when no official government is installed. And Putin, as foreign body, cannot call out a referendum - that is ridicilious.

In short the US not backing up "rebels" (demonstrators were being shot at and killed) and Putin has no legal power to set up a referendum in a sovereign state. That is stating that if Putin will be setting referendum today in Texas that this is democracy and legally binding. It seems thatyou turn things around in your statement out of fear of involvement. The truth is, we are already involved. We are since the UN Convention.

Where is this non information coming from. Muslims are a minority here... They is no threat. The Tar is only 12% of the population. There is a greater danger of ethnic cleansing as we saw in Srebenica from the Russian side.

The West was against this referendum because no public referendum that is guaranteed to be fair and on the up and up can possibly be staged in 10 days. The way they went about this referendum bears no relation to democracy.

The Summer of Putin continues. The Cold War is about to start up again w/ NATO doing war exercises with Ukraine.

Forward. I do believe that was the slogan going into this year.
