I need help. My plans have changed and I am bringing my family (2 kids + hubby) to Dc for the Sat. show. Does anyone know of a good family friendly restaurant ie. not a bar -not fancy white tableclothes and affordable- and also we' re vegetarian- no seafood either. Within walking distance of the theater a plus.

The theater sight suggested some but none will work for us. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Did you try http://www.opentable.com? That's where I always look first.
We're trying Chef Geoff's across the street from The Warner.

Do a search for downtown. Aria Trattoria looks good, it's casual and close.
  • I think you'll find that most DC restaurants suck. And they suck even more if you have several restrictions, i.e. vegetarian, kid friendly, downtown location, no seafood. It's a shame, but the sad truth about this town. It's in love with itself and that attitude trickles laterally from the A-holes that make it famous to the chefs and restaurant owners who've convinced themselves their shitty food is worth a lot of money. I've lived in DC for 3 years, and there's barely a restaurant I like, and I have no kids and I'm not vegetarian.

That said, go to Matchbox at 8th and H Streets. Really good stuff and about 6 blocks from the Warner, at 12th and E.

Cafe Luna in Dupont Circle may be a good option for your family.

If not, go to http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/cityguide/dc-restaurant-guide.html# and search for veggie restaurants in DC -- there are 27 restaurants to choose from.

Also, it is Restaurant Week in DC through Sunday. I had an amazing three-course lunch at nearby PS7 (not veggie tho) for $20 + tax + tip. Participating restaurants: http://www.washington.org/restaurantwk/

that's a horribly negative view of DC. there are definitely places that are pretentious but if you explore more of other areas....get out of Georgetown or the business area and you'll find great local places to try.

Try Vegetate if you're looking for good vegetarian food...it's not walkable from the venue, but it's a great spot to check out.

If you like Indian, Nirvana is a great option on K St.

Some good tapas options would be La Tasca or Jaleo.
  • I visited DC a few years ago and I wasn't in love with most of it, but I will always remember this place, although maybe not as exciting if you are ordering all veg:

Sushi Taro! Lots of families, couples, old people, young people. You take off your shoes and sit on the floor. The sushi was really fresh. I was considering heading to DC this weekend, can't do it now but this place really was a reason I almost did it.

Edited to add: The other positive thing about DC was bike riding! It was a fun place to ride bikes, I remember biking to the Lincoln Memorial at night when it was semi deserted and it was all silent and majestic feeling. Just to add something nice. :)

Chef Geoff's is actually a pretty good idea. Very close to the venue, not too expensive by DC standards, and they probably have as many veggie options as you're going to find in that area.

I second all of those, particularly Nirvana.

Vegetate tries but does not succeed. Overpriced, small portions and unremarkable food. Chef Geoff's is probably your best bet in the area. Matchbox is awesome and has veggie options. Zaytinya is even closer to the venue, totally veggie friendly, totally good and nice. Ditto for Rasika.

As for the person who's been in DC for 3 years, do you realize it is restaurant week? Get yourself a reservation at Rasika, The Oval Room or Ristorante Tosca and realize that DC is not a culinary backwater.
