    Happy Birthday, JonnyP! I too just turned 40 a few weeks ago and honestly it didn't phase me much. I agree with others that growing older gives one the opportunity to know and appreciate yourself and others more. I personally love this stage of my life as I finally have the means financially, emotionally and logistically to look at myself now and then and figure out what I might need or want. I think the 40s are going to be an excellent time for me.

    Happy belated, fellow Cap. My 40th is next year. I'm not sweating it too much. Not nearly as much when my wife told me that she was pregnant with our first around August of 2009. I swear I got my first grey hair that day.

    Don't even know what men would be worried about btw. Isn't the 40s when men are supposed to be in their prime?

    Age certainly has its huge advantages. We have more experience and wisdom, a clearer outlook on the world, and generally people feel more comfortable with themselves when they're older I think, and probably understand other people better too. I love these things, and wouldn't want to give them up to be younger. It's the physical aspect of aging that bothers me. Sure, we can try to maintain the best we can and be healthy, etc..... but the body running down in various ways is ultimately inevitable (not to mention death!), and I just fucking hate that with each birthday I am getting closer to that inevitability! It sucks!! What's the saying? Wealth is wasted on the old, and youth is wasted on the young? I think there is something to that!
    (not to say that I am actually freaking btw.... i accept it as life.... but it still sucks!)
    I know of some people that are well past 40 and still need to grow the fuck up. image

    I do take better care of myself than I did when I was in my 20s, and my Dr. is very happy that I can still lose weight, she said something to the effect of, "after 40, it's nearly impossible for women to lose weight, and it's a lot easier for them to put on more of it"

    I wanna be one of those old ladies that is still running around at 90-something with a whip smart sense of humor.

    The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

    Hell to the yes! My husband turned 41 this past November and I swear the man has never been sexier to me. It's not just physical, either.

    (and truth be told, at 48, despite those pesky fucking health issues, life is the best it's ever been)

    (and, fifth decade, JP? Bit of a mind-fuck on your boss' part. Bastard!)

    I met a lady the other day who was 62 and still going to the gym daily. She was in amazing shape. That's how I want to be when I'm 62. Running, spinning, lifting or whatever... Just looking and feeling great. She was an inspiration. My plan to stay young is to eat right, move my body in some way a lot and love and laugh as much as possible.

    A very very late Happy Birthday! 40 was not a difficult one for me. The hardest one would have been when I turned 20--I was no longer a teenager, but I was not old enough to legally purchase alcohol. I want to think that 50 will not be difficult for me, but I have a few years until I find out for sure.

    Happy Birthday again...
    I never really had an issue with birthdays at all... I think I am getting better with age ...
    UNTIL
    This one. My 47th... Same age as my dad was when he died.
    I am afraid of all the things I could miss and feeling the sadness all over again. Took me many years to get over that.
