i swim a lot & i would love to tell you i been swimming 7 days a week but that isn't exactly the facts. saturday seems to be my day off & not necessarily my choice. saturday at the pool is swimming lessons day & it is a complete chaotic zoo fulla bullshit i don't wanna deal with.

i feel like a complete baby & candy ass when i miss a day of swimming.

you are not swimming outside are you? indoors, yes? do not give it up. you really should be swimming

tomorrow, like most sunday's, i swim extra to make up for missing the day before. this makes me feel like i'm not cheating or quitting or being lazy or being a fucking baby

i personally would not feel good about myself if there was even one person at the pool who worked at swimming harder than i do, therefore, i bust my hump.... maybe there is & i just don't know about them? ............ fuck!

yeah that opinion thread it seems has turned into a job & that is fine, i like struggling
    :((

No, I'm swimming indoors, it's a pain in the ass to get all bundled up with the wet hair ect.... I'm not a fan of the change room , I get in and out as fast as humanly possible. We have a lake we frequent in the summer, can't get me out of the water then!!
Keep up the good work on the opinion thread, it's my favourite one to read these days!!

I started swimming a bit more regular recently. I'm only doing about 1,200 yards or so at a time right now. I'm a swim coach, so, really, it's kind of sad, but it's a start!

My biggest concern right now, however, is learning how to swim with a massive beard. Every time I turn to get a breath, water drains off my stache into my mouth. Not very effective. I could trim it, but where's the fun in that?

also us bearded folks are swimming with great drag. we are old & slow as our mugs struggle through the wetness. it is greatness & a lot of work everyday or even nearly everyday.

i been so exhausted lately i can barelly function let alone swim. i did not swim this past weekend, not one stroke. plus i had my nephew E out here for the weekend. i am leaving directly for the pool & it'll be ok then.

about the water dripping in your mouth from your whiskers... good. it keeps you moist. it keeps you strong & sometimes water may go in your lungs... this is good. now let's dump bricks into the drink & dive after them, tread water holding them above our heads passing the brick back & forth, yes/no? http://youtu.be/fR93649ySjk

LOL ... Yep, the whiskers do keep me moist, and that's a good thing! :)

I only have about 30 minutes of swim time a day -- stupid life getting in the way. I'm hoping to get the most out of my time by swimming faster and getting in more yardage.

Treading water with bricks is a great idea! Let's get rid of those fins those ... those are for sissies!

If I could afford the YMCA, I would be swimming. All I can afford is $10 Planet Fitness and they suck.

You know what I do there? I run in place over and over yet don't go anywhere, and I'm not even on a treadmill. I'm on an elliptical to help my bad knees. I need to swim!

If money is an issue, I know Ys offer assistance (disclaimer: I'm a swim coach for a Y team). I believe all you have to do is bring in your latest w2 or paycheck to see if you qualify for a reduced member fee. Worth checking out.

If that's not an option, check out local municipality pools. A lot of times those can be cheaper, or you pay per swim. I used to live in a town where it was something like $5 a swim, which isn't horrible if you only do it once a week. (And I believe they offered a discount if you bought swim days in bulk, too.)

Another option is to seek part-time employment somewhere with a pool, and you'll likely be allowed to swim there (and use their equipment for free). A lot of places will let you get away with working only one or two shifts a week, which could make it worth -- free gym membership and extra money in your pocket! :D

I've begun timing myself on some sprints. It's pretty sad when I compare my swims to what I did in High School.

    This week:
    500 Freestyle @ 7:35. My HS time was 5:07
    100 IM @ 1:26.
    50 Fly @ 0:35. HS was @ 0:25.7
    50 Back: 0:40
    50 Breast: 0:45
    50 Free @ 0:35. HS was 0:23 :/

My goal is to get the 100 IM down to 1:15, my 500 down to 6:00 (only have to drop 5 seconds each 25, oy!), and to be able to swim some 100 sprints in fly and free without dying.

    Here goes nothing!

i am slow or not quick in the wet. i look at it like having sexual intercourse. my big old ass travels through the water like a WWII nine-ton landing craft navigations machine making its way for the beaches.

im at around 1 mph freestyle stroking, some days better than others. also i can get even slower than turtles mating & here's how - those buoyant dumbells turn a freestyle swim into a 1/2 a mile per hour event & this is my very favorite & most trying swim considering when starting this operation i could do a whole ten laps (75 foot pool - down is one lap/back is two laps) then go about my swim. then i would switch it up, every other lap would be freestyle no dumbells, freestyle dumbells & do my one mile in this fashion. today - everyday i swim i grab those floating dumbells & swim one - two hrs. this is purely fantastic & as slow as can be & is powering up those shoulders, arms, neck & chest muscles. flex those boobs & make grandpa's tattoo dance a jig

my hairy ass face slows me down, my big ass frame is not a speedboat, more power to you guys that fly through the drink, you are doing wonderful work but watch your backs you crazy speed demons, im back there coming up on ya's like a sleepy old rusty ass anchor or something. surprisingly enough there are slim trim swimmers who are even behind me. this is unacceptable

I got in about 2,200 yards on Tuesday, which was the most I've swam in a single period in some time.

Yesterday I swam about 1,200 yards ... I felt more sore than when I finished on Tuesday! Stupid muscles, not used to swimming yet and too slow to recover ...

    ruling the water = you
2,200 yards is 1.25 miles or 6600 feet (5280 ft in one mile)
1,200 yards is 0.68 miles (so over a 1/2 mile)
    beautiful

today was easy day bullpoop as my knees ached after being needled with
so i did some shallow water exercises - both upper & lower body & stretches & things to get well warmed up plus treaded water a good 20-30 min & then i swam a hard 1/4 mile or 1320 feet or 440 yards
i think... no, i know for a fact i swim my laps quicker when i am not wearing my swim cap
the swim cap needs adjustments often, this means im adjusting my stuff wrapped around my head & burning up time instead of getting after it

my swim cap tore the other day; had to order a new one
i am pretty sure today's quarter mile was around 12 minutes which is a lot quicker than my standard 15-20 minute quarter mile. straight swimming, no dumbells, no swim cap adjusting... nice time for me

so today i had two dr. appointments. my primary doctor always asks, "are you still swimming?"
yes i am, all the time.
he said, "you are persistant & this is why you will succeed at your goals, health issues"
"swimming is in fact saving your life, you are saving yourself"
doc, you have no idea just how persistant i am, i will drive you crazy before i stop
"but you will not quit & i know this"
you're right, i couldn't stop working at becoming a better man. some may, i will not
"you're the most determined person i have ever met"
    are you serious?
    "i wouldn't have said that if i wasn't serious"
    wow thanks, doc! #$%^&*&^%$#$%^&*

but if i could only have a rewind, i sure as shit would back up my life just a bit & start over in another direction instead of living a self abusive lifestyle. being your own nightmare is not good

so now being addicted to swimming saves & makes stronger vs' addicted to drugs & alcohol which creates unhealthy living & someday will kill

sorry for the long-winded crap, had to get this off my chest

thank you for helping out keeping this swim thread living
& thanks for being a swim instructor & mentoring young kids in the water; my mom did this for 30 years & was a lifeguard & helped adults overcome their fear of water & a whole pile of other aquatic stuff

    be well, sir

Way to stay persistent! Keep it up and you'll be able to do that quarter mile swim in less than 10 minutes, for sure.

I highly recommend swimming with a cap ... pool chemicals can destroy your hair. They have different types ... silicon, latex ... see which works best for you.

That's awesome about your mom! When I think of myself 30 years from now, I can't imagine not continuing my work with instructing young people in the pool.

yeah i been using a swim cap for a few yrs now. i believe they're latex but they could be silicon as well. i'll be darned

chlorine screws up my hair making it crunchy fried & stiffer than aquatic johnson. for a dude with long curly ringed up hair this is a disaster. swim cap...X, chlorine removal shampoo before regular shampooing & conditioning...X
