Celebrities and Dictators

Saw the picture with eddie and sean penn with moore and maher the other day.got me thinking of why some celebrities praise these dictatators(castro, chavez etc..)Is penn and oliver stone etc..that ignorant or that communist?I am a cuban and i know what it is to live under fidels rule. There is no freedom. My father was a political prisoner as is many others..Castro murdered thousands who didnt go with his revolution...its just really frustrating to see these people being buddies with these tyrants..

Eddie was friends with johnny ramone which was a hard republican, so i guess it evens out! :)

For the record, i'm independant (liberal i guess)...but i sure aint no communist..

My opinion of the Castro regime changed when a good friend who is half-Cuban spent time in Cuba and came back and told my how oppressed and dirt poor the people are there. But it's also important to understand that other countries (you-know who) have had a lot to do with this too.

  • I heard in an interview with Ed recently where he said something to the extent of how he didn't even finish high school and laughs that people listen to his views and how he's just an entertainer. I found it really interesting. I wish I knew where I read it or heard it. But it's a really good point. A lot of our celebrities aren't really educated. I'm sure they read books and follow events, but you have to wonder what books and what bias information are they getting. In college you really learn how to look at things in an unbiased way, gather information on both sides, and then make an informed decision. I think this critical thinking is lacking in most of our "stars". They latch onto an idea, they have a public voice and then use it. I think that's one of the biggest problems with how our population is evolving. I could keep going and get more in depth but yea..

matts, I'm not sure I agree with you there (or with Ed) in terms of formal education providing the ability to think and/or learn with an open mind. I know many people with many degrees who are as limited in their "thinking" as they come...and conversely, many without degrees who are some of the most intelligent people I know...both in the book-smart and street-smart/common sense ways.

    Takes all kinds.

That said, I put as much stock in entertainers' views as I do anyone else I don't really know. I may listen to them but it doesn't mean they'll necessarily resonate.

(and if Ed does indeed laugh about people listening to his opinions...well, he keeps putting them out there, so...joke's on us? Hmmm...)
  • Great posts!

Guess what i am thinking is it was just a bit disapointing to see Ed with this dictator lover.Cant look into it too much I guess.

As I live this life, I find some things are worth looking into, and some not.

In the end, I believe it's good to question what makes no sense to us.

I have the same conflict with Eddie, I guess I'll join the "don't look too hard" club, still if he shares some of those ideas I'd be disappointed [-(

  • It is hard to believe he is a comy...Unless he comes out and says he supports dictators or sings for them.. I'll keep telling myself he just has a diverse group of friends....
