Dark, Dreary, Somber, Sad, Depressive music, who is the best??

So Who has the market cornered on the sound of struggle?

Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stabbing Westward, NIN??The Cure, Explosions In The Sky? Mogwai?

Who do you think, who has the music you hear and makes you wonder, man why do they feel so fucking bad about life/whatever?

Curious who you all think

yup. my thoughts exactly. Lanegan is up there as well. Elliott's music is a contradiction....stunning in its beauty, but so sad in (most) of its lyrical content.

    I LOVE MUSIC.

The darkest one for me is NIN. When I 'm really aggressive, I play the downward spiral. Screaming along with Trent gives me great release.

Another interesting one is Miles Davis' "Shhh/Peaceful". It's the first of 2 songs from his album "In A Silent Way". It's not depressing, but dark and dreary are 2 perfect words for it (somber too I suppose). To me it is one of the ultimate rainy day discs, in any genre.

And man...when Miles' trumpet first comes in after the intro section it's just bliss.

  • Mark Kozelek is particularly depressing.
The most harrowing record I've ever heard is Josh T Pearson 'Last of The Country Gentlemen'. If you haven't heard it I highly recommend it. It is the most personal record I've ever heard.

Mark Lanegan and Bonnie Prince Billy. Maybe also Ray Lamontagne. Love all three of them though.

"Good Woman" and "Names" off of Cat Power's You Are Free record are two of the saddest and darkest songs, respectively, that I've ever heard. Equally beautiful, though, as well.

It took me a little bit to figure out what that meant. image I agree that The Wall is horribly depressing. For me it gives a really stark outlook on the mind of man. It feels like its preordaining a post-apocalyptic future for us all. It's like reading 1984 for me...... Just an amazing album though!!

  • For me, it's Alice in Chains. I'm not sure if all their lyrics are so dark, but their sound sure is. Their songs just sound so damn depressing to me...it's why I can't stand them.
