Mint condition?

I'm sure its been said before but it can't be said enough...

Please grade your merch appropriately...

If a vinyl clearly has its grooves worn down and an audible hard scratch to skip, it is not Mint. It is not Near Mint, It is not even Very Good.

It's okay to be picky about what we trade/pay for, no?

I agree. I keep it simple, if I have opened it and played it, it is now NM to M-. From there it can be tough, but I think people who own the record are typically not very objective.

  • I had a bad experience with some asshole of a dealer at discogs that took my money and never sent me the LP...
it was my only first and only time buying an LP there... this was a few years back... I haven't gotten around posting
    a review of him/her.

This is an important reminder. I am sick of getting VG+ records that crackle from all the wear and light scratches. VG+ is supposed to still be a good listening experience with minimal surface noise, if any at all. It really pisses me off, especially when it's a super expensive record. People seem to apply the rating one higher on the chart to albums on a fairly regular basis. Because of that, unless I'm desperate, I don't buy anything that is rated lower than NM- anymore. My copy of Day for Night was the last straw. It has so much surface noise with a VG+ rating, from a seller with tons of transactions and a 100% rating. I also get the feeling that people are scared to rate sellers lower than 100% because of the retaliation factor. You rate them badly as a seller, and they rate you badly as a buyer, which hurts you if you make offers. Not that that come into play here on the boards, but just sayin'.

  • When I buy records off the net... I ask for photos of the vinyl before I make a purchase. I decide with my best judgement but it's not all 100% due to trickery and lightning in the photo towards the record.

You shouldn't have to go this far. People just need to practice honesty. I've never wanted something enough to purchase a Vg+ off the Internet. I think the M grade shouldn't really be used unless it is unplayed, but even then you have no idea if there are manufacturing defects or a bent corner on the sleeve.

This was the first time I bought a record from Lost Dogs and it was a total fail.

I totally agree with you but most of these record dealers are conmen with their BS... I just want to protect myself even with the pennies I pay for the goods... I would been mortified if I ended up with a failure of the Lost Dogs records. You try this online shop www.eil.com sometimes a little pricey and other times cheap, but I have never received a bad record from them... they usually get records in to sell at EX+ to Mint... I normally buy a record or two from them monthly. I do trust them when it comes to buying vinyl.
