Is this album any good?
I still have not taken the wrapping off.
Never been a Stones fan.

It's a very good album but I like a lot of the Stones stuff. It's a little dancy/disco-y but not over the top. If say it's within their top 5 albums.

Great album, I'm a Stones fan tho. I too would say top 5 for sure.

Great album... agree with the top 5 comments. Many influences on this album ranging from disco (Miss You), country (Far Away Eyes), punk (Respectable), a great cover (Just My Imagination... which I think is better than the Temptations version) and straight ahead rock (Before They Make Me Run, Shattered)

This is the album that they had to pull off after Keith's arrest in Toronto for heroin possession and his subsequent cleaning up. They figured if he was going to spend the next 20 years in jail, then this was going to be the Stones' swan song.

So... with the aforementioned said: it's about time to become one (a Stones fan). Like scotch and red wine (or beer as a 15 year old for that matter)... some things are acquired tastes. What initially doesn't go down so easily... sometimes goes down in most pleasurable fashion.

May I suggest Tattoo You to start with? Play the shit out of that album- never skipping a song (don't just keep playing Start Me Up). After you have played the shit out of it... go to Sticky Fingers and play the shit out of that album (same methodology as Tattoo You).

When you have completed the above tasks, go online and buy yourself a Stones t-shirt, invest in some more albums, and look at your secret santa gift... and say to yourself, "What a thoughtful secret santa!"

The Stones are my favorite band of all time.
Let it bleed is my favorite album, but some girls makes the top 5. The deluxe version has some fantastic "new" songs.

If you are a beginner stones fan, I suggest starting off with stripped. It's a live album with a good selection of older songs. Regardless, do yourself a favor and dive into their catalogue. I'm listening to goat heads soup as I type this. Winter is such a great tune....

Right there is why you should listen to the whole album and fall in love with it!

OP -they will be in your homeland soon. Dig into the stones and consider seeing them. I saw them twice last year and they still have it.

  • It's sold out here so wouldn't be able to go if I wanted.
I don't think I want to see elderly men playing.
Even if my beloved Pearl Jam are still doing that at that age I would be reluctant to go.

So you are saying that when you get older you are not going to listen to Pearl Jam and all your favourite rock bands?

What age will this 'retirement' take place and what will come out of your headphones then?

I'll still listen to them, not sure about concerts.

I just think the stones are well past their retirement age.
Do you think young people want to see old guys on stage or artists of their age?

    Needs a few more listens.
I like the song 'Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)', I know it's a cover but it's better than the original in my opinion.
Far Away Eyes is good too.

I saw the Stones in the 80s and was awed. I saw them this past year in Vegas and before I did... I wasn't really too optimistic- almost apprehensive to be honest. I was shocked- they were great. Truly. And I left the concert with a whole new level of respect for them.

Chronological age is not the true indicator of one's age. You'll see what I mean. Just wait and see.

The Who shows I've been to in the last 10 years have had lots of very young fans (20-somethings), not just old folks like me. The Quad tour last year was their best in many years. And for the record, I've been hearing for about 20 years that The Who should pack it in. They've been at it just as long as the Stones.

If they've still got it (and they have), there's no reason for the Stones to retire unless they want to. Performing is what musicians do.

I love both bands but do not get excited about either live anymore. But what the hell do I know, I still enjoy Dylan love :?.
