How to use the internet to support local shopping.

Last year a very popular on-line shopping outfit (think rain forest) suggested that on-line shoppers go to their local retail stores and take photographs of items and prices of things they want to purchase and [rain forest] would match or beat those prices- in effect, an on-line sales company using a tactic to negatively impact local shopping.
My answer to that is- do the reverse. I've found that by using on-line shopping sites such as [rain forest] I can read reviews and get information on products to better narrow my choices down and then find that product in a local store in order to support local retail. I know this won't work for everybody and for every location but for any of you who like the idea of supporting local economy I thought I'd pass this suggestion along.
