Freedom for Arctic 30, Pussy Riot Celebrated as Russian Amnesty Law Passes

With a vote of 446-0 in the Russian parliament on Wednesday, the passage of a sweeping amnesty bill comes as a welcome gift to the international Greenpeace team known as the 'Arctic 30,' two prominent members of the Russian protest group Pussy Riot, and other prisoners in the country's jails and prison camps who could be released as early as today if the law is swiftly stamped by President Vladimir Putin.

Good political play by Putin in time for the Olympics.
  • I knew there had to be a reason...
The amnesty, backed by Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, is timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Russia's constitution, and is being seen as a move to boost Russia's image ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, due to start in less than two months.

Otherwise, it wouldn't. Putin's treatment of Pussy Riot has been hardly easy on the girls.

Yeah, it's too bad they aren't being released simply because it's the right thing to do. It seems like so much of the time there has to be some kind of pay-off or hidden agenda involved. In any case, I will celebrate and be grateful for the release of all these people.

    Just as I thought ...

Putin calls Russia response to Greenpeace Arctic protest a lesson

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday Russia's response to a Greenpeace protest over Arctic oil drilling should serve as a lesson and Moscow would toughen steps to guard against interference in its development of the region.

Putin suggested Greenpeace activists detained for a protest at a drilling platform operated by state-controlled Gazprom in September may have been carrying out an order to undermine Russia's development of Arctic energy resources.

    .....

"This is a serious thing for us. And we do not plan to soften (our stance), we will only be toughening it."

No surprise there. All developed nations will fight with everything they (we) have to protect their oil "rights" until every last drop is squeezed out and burned regardless of the consequences. We're a suicidal species that will continue to punish it's members who work and fight to save what we can.
