“Mind if I vape?”

The question may become more common as electronic cigarettes become more popular. The answer, however, remains elusive. Etiquette aside, the health effects of inhaling nicotine vapor (hence the term) are largely unknown. More research is clearly needed, but in the meantime, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has to start regulating e-cigarettes.

U.S. consumers will spend $1 billion on battery-powered smokes this year, 10 times more than they did four years ago. Are e-cigarettes, which come in such flavors as chocolate and butter rum, a benign device to help people stop smoking? Or are they just a new way to feed an old addiction? How safe, compared with tobacco smoke, is the vapor they create?

No one knows. The small studies that have been done so far hint at both pros and cons; one found that smokers cut back on real cigarettes after trying the electronic kind, while another found particles of metal and silicates in e-cigarette vapor that could cause breathing problems. That there are more than 200 brands containing varying levels of nicotine and other substances only makes it harder to assess their safety.

I know. Nictotine in the body is a poison. it is just a new way to feed an old addiction.

  • I can't imagine inhaling large amounts of vapor in your lungs can be good for them.
  • i used one of these and quit smoking completely for about six months. i realize the risk that vapor and nicotine being breathed in may cause, but i can tell you i felt 100 times better while smoking that e-cigarette than when i was smoking butts. tasted better than cigarettes, i got my sense of smell and taste back, i could breath easier and more freely and my body in general felt better. a lot of that has to do with the fact that you're not breathing in all the additional crap that they put in cigarettes (rat poison, fiberglass shavings, stuff they sweep up off the floor). unfortunately i picked smoking back up again though (due more to my own addiction than the e-cig being ineffective).

I vaped weed(have since quit again), but I can say that users make claims that it is so much better for you because you are only heating it to 370 degrees but I can tell you the straw was caked with resin. That is still going into your lungs.
  • It takes long term research, like about a generation, to know how dangerous or safe a product is. If people really do quit smoking, then great. Otherwise, it's hard for me to imagine that long term use of a nicotine product isn't harmful in some way.

Isn't it difficult to say if nicotine as a substance has a material long term effect? I don't think it has been studied outside of the delivery method of cigarettes and dip. And we know how bad the added carcinogens are. Remember that UCLA did that 30 year (or so) study on chronic pot smokers and didn't find a link between cancer and weed. So I'm not sure it is cut and dry to say nicotine by itself has a harmful long term effect. I think that's the OPs question at the end of the day. Research will be required.

By the way, vapping weed is great. A friend vapes all the time. And then he turns the residue into the butter for cookies and brownies. He is basically doubling up his supply. Pretty great.

Again, we won't have real quantifiable information without decades of research. The given is that continued use of nicotine will maintain nicotine addiction. If somebody enjoys wasting their money on an addiction, then I guess they'll enjoy their e-cigs.

I'm leery of something presented as a "safe" alternative to smoking, simply because that isn't a new marketing concept. Filtered cigarettes and "light" cigarettes were promoted as safer by tobacco companies and they're not.

  • Vaping has really changed my life for the better instead of smoking. I don't know the long term health effects of it yet as this just hasn't been around long enough nor have I used it long enough. I can say as a smoker for 20 years I got bronchitis once or twice a year as a smoker as I got older. Since I converted 2 years ago to vaping nicotine (no regular cigs at all) I have not had it since. My sinuses are much better and my wife likes the way I smell again (ash tray smell sucks). Many of us tried to convert together at work and only 3 of us managed to stick with it long term so it is definitely not for all smokers.

I am really excited for the advancements in sub ohm vaping with standard equipment they are getting into. It will take a lot more liquid but allows for a better vape experience without burning the liquid.

Ecigs have actually increased my fathers nicotine addiction. For heavily addicted, lifelong smokers there is more to it than just nicotine delivery. It is a habit with several facets. When work went no smoking he started vaping, and gradually increasing the amount of actual nicotine he was receiving without satisfying the habit. The result was needing more cigarettes when home, and now that the plant closed, than he ever smoked before. It isn't for everyone, just pay attention to whether it really is working for you.

To prove his it isn't for everyone point.. Our roomate ( a life long family friend) has smoked cigs for 41 years, full strength non filtered. He switched to vaping a year ago, and while yes, he's spending less money than he did on cigarettes, his Nicotene level has blasted through the ROOF!! The good thing is, my step mom is highly allergic to smoke of any kind. But that stuff is virtually undetectable! I have a nose a bloodhound would pay for, which has increase exponentially since I quit smoking ( everything, if I have some green I do edibles), and I can barely smell it!! But seriously, now this guy just puffs away on this vape pipe more than he ever did when he was smoking cigs. So I think Gambs is right on the nose with the statement that any addictive form depends on the person.

Having fun giving hundreds of million of dollars to the Big Tobacco corporate big wigs who are literally profiting from you slowly dying, and they don't give a shit. They've found another cash cow and make no mistake - e-cigs are only in existence because they found a way to make money off of people who want to quit.

    F*** cigarettes. F*** e-cigs. And f*** big tobacco.

  • some douchebag at work actually thought it was appropriate to vape nicotine at his fucking desk. HR actually had to send out a mass email saying that smoking of any kind (vaporizer or not) is not permitted indoors at our workplace.

some people are so fucking stupid. and this guy is a manager.

I know several people who have stopped smoking due to e-cigs after trying all the other stuff on the market. I don't see any downside in that outcome.
