Has anyone in a band paid rights/royalties for cover tunes?

I have a question for anyone in a band that has made a record with a cover song.

My band is self producing our first full length record. There are nine original songs and one PINK FLOYD cover.

We are doing the duplication through Discmakers. They suggest we register the cover song with Limelight. its a little over $100. Im worried because they will upload the songs to several digital sevices like amazon and pandora and I dont want a phone call from Roger Waters attorneys!

Anyone ever do anything like this?
Thanks! :)
Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)

  • i did this with a band i played with in high school/early college. i think we ended up paying a certain amount per CD to have the song on there (we covered "For What It's Worth). not sure what the exact cost was per copy (i remember it being in the cents), but some covers will cost more to put on a CD than others. it may actually be cheaper to pay a flat $100 depending on the number of CD's you are making. some of those sites include royalty collection, covers, etc. as part of what they do ala CD Baby. there are also songs that have been around long enough that they fall in to the "public domain" which means you can cover them and recreate them without paying those fees.
it's a fragile thing, this life we lead.
