What's your preference on collection? Vinyl or Prints..

It seems i'm at crossroads in what avenue I want to go down. I have have a few concert prints i still need to round out my concert collection, but of course they aren't too cheap. So i can spend my money on those or tighten up my vinyl collection.

I know some people will just say collect both, but if you had to choose, which one would you choose? Do you think the value of vinyl will outlast the posters or vice versa. My only concern with vinyl is that the more I play the less valuable it gets, so it doesn't seem like they can be enjoyed as much as framed art work.

I started out with posters, but soon I got into vinyl. It equalled for a bit, but I think vinyl is more important to me now. I can just do more with it, I guess :) Also, maintaining my vinyl collection costs less money. I cannot afford to whop out $160 plus for every poster that I want to have framed. And that portfolio that everybody is praising here so much is kind of out of my price range too. I love seeing my posters on the wall, but it kind of boiled down to wanting the posters of the gigs that I went to if I like them (we didn't get the Buffalo poster, for example). They get framed in cheap frames, which can be nice too :)

So I would say, if I had to choose, I would choose vinyl.
  • Do you know of any site of historic vinyl prices. I'm interested to see if the prices fluctuate between album releases.

If you have your collection listed on discogs, you can have the value of your collection shown, based on the prices these albums went for in the past. It gives you estimates of the lowest value, the medium value and the highest :) Pretty cool tool, I think, for example if something happens and you need a evaluation for the insurance. Maybe expressobeans has something like that too (the highest and lowest selling price). Other than that others have to step in here.

There are hundreds of posters. PJ vinyl is rare in most cases. Some posters demand crazy prices and the only vinyl that beats those crazy prices is the Benny. But if you have a good copy of Binaural I'm sure you could trade it for a poster that is worth a lot more.
  • I collect a poster only if I go to a show.

Vinyl has always been my thing.
    So vinyl.
  • I will tell you go vinyl if you want to have any money left. I mean if you are just sticking to gig posters then sure, that's fine. But my love for PJ posters of my shows has led me down a road to where I have spent more money on posters than I could have ever imagined. I bought 4 or 5 prints this year that run close to double and a little more than double the price of a Benny. But when you see those pieces in person it really is something else.

I say go with both and just dump all your money into it. Then after a few years of collecting you can shed the excess. :D

I started my small collection with posters. Some time ago i felt like i need to start listening to vinyl again so i got a new turntable and started to get as many vinyls as i could. I find collecting vinyls cheaper plus its unlimited. As soon as my walls are covered with posters I think I'll stop buying with some exceptions.
