Martin Bashir has resigned from MSNBC, nearly three weeks after delivering a scathing personal attack on Sarah Palin that brought him widespread condemnation.

The afternoon talk show host, a former co-anchor of "Nightline," says he decided to leave the network after meeting with MSNBC President Phil Griffin.

Bashir had already apologized for what he called "offensive" comments about the former Alaska governor, whom he also called an "idiot" and "dunce." He told viewers in a scripted commentary last month that someone should defecate in Palin's mouth. He was invoking an old slave punishment in response to a speech by Palin, a Fox News contributor, comparing the national debt to slavery.

  • yeah this guy had to go. it was probably one of those "resign or you are fired" kinda things.

there is no excuse for what he said about palin.

i despise palin and think her 15 minutes were over an hour ago, but this guy had no business saying what he said about her.

    look at me, defending palin.

what the hell is wrong with me?? :fp:

    Bravo.

    (and good out  )

Sometimes shit is simply about principles (and maybe - MAYBE - at the very least within the journalism realm, professionalism).

this guy is a loose canon....

Turns out Martin Bashir’s mouth has gotten him into trouble before.

Bashir resigned from MSNBC Wednesday over the sliming of Sarah Palin after meeting with the network’s president, Phil Griffin.

But this isn’t the first time that Bashir has had to apologize for his remarks about a woman. While working for ABC News in the summer of 2008, he was addressing an Asian American Journalists Association convention in Chicago, with his “20/20” colleague Juju Chang also on stage. He began commenting on her dress.

As New York magazine reported in a brief and little-noticed item, Bashir said that "I’m happy to be in the midst of so many Asian babes.” And, he added, “I’m happy that the podium covers me from the waist down.” He said a speech should be “like a dress on a a beautiful woman — long enough to cover the important parts and short enough to keep your interest — like my colleague Juju’s.” Some audience members booed, the magazine said

To many non Americans it can be pretty shocking that such utterly moronic people can actually hold a public office. Palin has said any number of things that would make you unelectable in the UK, and yet although she is too much of a quitter to actually hold down a job these days, she still has a significant and rabid following of fellow troglodytes. Her insane and extreme views could even be considered mainstream in the USA.

So I can sympathise with his attitude. That said, it was incredibly unprofessional of him.

Sure, if she were a model. But since she is hamfistedly attempting to be a political pundit, no, it doesn't.

I can't defend what Bashir said but if by some strange occurrence Sarah Palin were ever to be elected President of the United States I can guarantee Bashir's words will seem tame compared to some of the things we would hear. Even me, cool, calm, collected me- I would have to keep myself off every kind of internet site not related to my business for a good long while.

No, there won't, because the court of public opinion only requires one sacrifice. The channel will drop it now, and nobody will say anything more about it.
