just saw it revealed on 60 minutes.

still a few years off...

Then Bezos played a Prime Air demo video for the 60 Minutes team that showed how his octocopters will pick up packages in small yellow buckets at Amazon’s fulfillment centers and whiz through the air to deliver items to individual customers 30 minutes after they hit the “buy” button online at Amazon.com.

  • Looks great in a criminal free world, but all it will take is a gun and good aim to get a free package to sell on Ebay if these become popular.

And what happens when one of those propellers cuts someone?

Cool idea, but I don't see this happening within 5 years like hoped.

so Amazon is going to be launching strikes? How much will that cost? Maybe free 'delivery' with Amazon Prime?

yeah this is way beyond 5 years, if ever.

    How do you know?

I mean, I am skeptical about it and there are obvious questions like the one you raised about apartments. It would also be interesting to see how they deal with urban areas in general and how they go about not decapitating anyone. There are a shit load of questions that need to be answered but I think it is pretty fucking cool. I also don't think that Jeff Bezos would be spending his time talking about and working on something that he doesn't think will happen. That's what engineers are for. 10 years ago would you have thought that Google would have a picture of basically every street/house in the country?

I love these kinds of stories. There are a lot of really smart people coming up with a lot of really awesome ideas. Well over 99.99% of them will never work, but there are a shit load of companies coming up with some really innovative things that can change the world. I think that's awesome.

I mean, yeah, why have electric drones deliver things when you can pay UPS to deliver it in trucks that get 4 miles to a gallon?

There just seems to be way too many issues for it to even work.

I bet people said the same thing about Amazon.com 15 years ago. Now Jeff Bezos is worth $25 billion.

What would you have said 5 years ago if Google said they would have a car in 5 years that can drive itself?

There's a big difference between creating something that is used only in experiments and something having the ability to achieve mass appeal.

    Obviously....

The Google car seems to be a bit more than an experiment at this point though.

Talk about getting a ton of free advertising the day before the most important online shopping day of the year. :geek:

Brilliant move by Bezos. He could have made up a tale of a futuristic jolly old fat man in a red suit w/ a sleigh and 8 reindeer as long as it got this much attention.

Did they talk about Pizza places delivering by drones in the 60Min segment? The drones lock onto your phones GPS and finds you. So great if ordering a pizza pie in an open field, park, baseball game, boat, whatever.

also groceries for people without transport.

    indeed!

google or YouTube 'Dominos Drone' or 'domicopter' (I think)
  • I dunno, I'm pretty on board with this and I think it will end up happening it the coming years. This is some pretty futuristic shit though. It's about time we start being like The Jetsons. If anybody is going to do it though, it's Amazon. I honestly think they're going to be the ones to finally take down Walmart as the biggest retailer in the world. I just hope that once that does happen that they remain a decently ran company and continue to treat employees well. This could be a huge turning point for how business is done as a whole.

It is important to keep an open mind. While not every idea comes to fruition, you need the crazy dreams first. My mother talked in the 1960's about wanting a picture phone so her kids could talk to their grandmother and see her. While Amazon drones may not take on the form currently presented, I have confidence that the concept will manifest in some way in the future.

how would that work for someone who lives in an apartment?

my thought as well. is the drone going to buzz your apartment and let you know you have a package? ring the bell for the doorman?

this is all far away from happening, but pretty cool amazon is really working this.

i imagine there will be package weight restrictions. and what about a GPS tracking device IN the package and not just on the drone? what if the drone crashes/malfunctions and your package gets tossed? amazon will need a way to still locate your goods in that scenario.

FAA requirements? at what height can these things fly? in a city where you have skyscrapers as high as 100 stories, it can prove difficult to maneuver.

having something within 30 minutes of ordering it is pretty cool, but does not help the I NEED IT RIGHT NOW generation we are raising.
