Notable and different, probably not "the best" but Cantrell (AIC) did a substancial portion of the solo in Alive at LA3 2009.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river
"You survived today.. No matter.. what band could come up here, this thing wouldn't happen, without you. Your the whole reason that this thing is even half way a success. It you surviving the rain. It's you who's gonna be sick tomorrow, it's you who we appreciate, thank you"
I liked how the band improvise after the mess..and the sing along eddie does is brilliant
It's unique...but i'm looking for awesome, tight, Mike killing it versions.
"awesome, tight, Mike killing it" = everything that's great about the song. The rest is just filler.
I'll throw St. Paul 1 - 2006 on there. Great solo, lots of energy.

Yeah...that was a very early inclusion on my list. So damn good.
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
So here's what I have been doing: my buddy who went with me to the Hartford show (his 4th) finally "gets" Pearl Jam (to a degree at least). He and I share Phish in common and can listen to jams all day. Whereas he is also a Dead fan, I am a PJ fan. He's sent me a lot of GD over the years and I dig some of it now, more than I used to for sure. Consequently, I've sent him a lot of PJ over the years, and although he could appreciate a good jam or tight version, something never clicked. He came to both Camden '00 shows, and 10/30/09 with me. We had a blast at all of them shows, but it wasn't until Hartford '13 that something in his head clicked. I'm not saying all of the sudden he is the world's biggest PJ fan, but he's truly been getting into it now and making up for lost time.
While at his Uncle's house a couple of weeks ago and telling him that the show we show was truly awesome, his Uncle, who really only knows the early stuff (and is a legit audiophile with a vinyl collection that would make all of you drool), gave my buddy a task to work with me on: what's the best version of Alive? He said, tongue in check, that "Alive" is "the" PJ song. To him it has it all: the hook, the guitar solo, the anthemic chorus...the whole thing. So we took it and ran with it.
It's funny, because historically I have always had my favorite versions of a lot of jam songs: Porch, Blood, Black, Immortality, RVM, etc. But although I love certain versions of Alive, I never really gave much thought to which ones were top tier vs just really good. So in effect this was a task for me as well.
So over the past few weeks I have ripped a lot of different versions for him (and me of course) to listen to. I've hit up every era. I started with around 25 versions, and then based on feedback from this thread and from a few buddies of mine, it's grown to almost 40.
The ones that stick out to my buddy so far are: 8/3/91 (the video version...iconic in its own right), 6/8/92, 3/17/95, 9/1/9/98, 3/4/03, 7/3/03, 5/12/06, 10/31/09
My own personal list would have a few others in the top tier discussion as well: 6/18/92, Unplugged, 10/30/09 (funny, because he was there too...)
Some are close, and some are really good, and only a handful have truly been cut from the discussion entirely.
But I know I am missing some gems.
Here is where I was hoping you all would come in. The end result of this is going to be a "definitive" mix he is going to make for his uncle. But in order to do this, he wants to do it right. Since his uncle is a huge audiophile (with a SICK system), we want true lossless wav files for the source. in my online Alive directory I have wav files, and then 256kbps mp3s to make online listening easier. But ideally I need wav files.
So if people can not only suggest versions, but rip a wav for me...that would be AWESOME.
