Vinyl Prices

It looks like I've picked the worst time ever to start my PJ vinyl collection. Looking at the history, prices have literally doubled or tripled over the last 12 months. What's everyone's take on this? I know vinyl is now becoming more popular again, but is this a trend that is likely to continue upwards or is this a market bubble?

  • My take is that people trying to start their collection now or within the last year are 2-3 years too late. There are a lot of people ISO PJ vinyl, and the supply just isnt there, which drives up prices. I remember when the most expensive non-Benny album was Binaural around $150. Everything else could be had for $100 or less. I'm glad my collection was completed before prices went through the roof!

Good luck in your search! I doubt prices will come down, until they reissue more stuff, but there is no guarantee of that...

There has been a huge resurgence in vinyl sales and the trend is likely to continue rising for a good while. Combine that with the fact that PJ just released a new album and are touring - so more people are paying attention to the band right now as well. This sparks interest in purchasing past goods in the secondhand market.

I would not expect prices on PJ albums to go down any time soon. Reissues would help drive the price down a little, but I wouldn't expect No Code, Yield, or Binaural to be reissued any time soon unless the band's relations with Sony rekindle.

However, when the tour ends, you may be able to find some better deals as people may be looking to unload some of their collection to help pay for their tour expenditures. Problem is, there are still way more people looking to buy than are selling.

Nothing has doubled or tripled in the last year.. The prices have been the same for a while!

Backspacer, lightning bolt - $20-30 (still in print)
    Ten, vs, vitology - $40-60ish
    Yield, no code, pj20 - $100-150ish
Binaural, riot act, avocado, lost dogs, rearview mirror, vault 3 - $200-300
    Benny hall - $800-1200

Sevens and red lb is nuts now!

I garuntee the red lb will be like $100 in a few years just like white back spacer

I brough the whole set from ten to backspacer a couple of years ago for $1000, and it included Lost Dogs, RVM, Mirrorball, Live on 2 Legs, plus a bunch of xmas singles, at the time I wasn't sure if I got a good deal, but as time goes on it seems to have been a good purchase given the current prices.

Yeah, I'll say. Some shmuck on eBay is trying to sell the whole thing for $6000. Nuts.

i feel you.. i have actually had most of my collection for a long time.. but i have been missing no code, yeild, Binaural. (started buying vinyl again around riot act).

im finally getting around to trying to complete my collection, and i actually just bought a no code off Discogs with a pretty banged up corner, but got it for $100 because of this. I figure, its in great shape otherwise, and i will listen to the SHIT out of no code.. im not trying to spend $250 on a sealed one.. someday i might want a perfect copy, hopefully a reissue makes this possible.

i have been selling an avocado in this current market, and altho i expect to get a fair amount for it, im also faced with people who back out of the purchase, because they realize they really cant spend $250 on a record... but hey, i have to sell it in this expensive black market, in order to purchase other records in the same inflated market.

sucks on both ends.. for someone like myself, who does not give a shit about collecting, but rather just wants to listen to them all the time.

I agree with this, that right now that are a lot more people interested in PJ vinyl because the band is so active, so you're dealing with a lot more competition, which is putting the vinyl at the higher end of its' price range.

But I also agree with this:

I started building my collection just after Avacado sold out, and each record's been in the same approximate price range since then. I'd say be patient (as possible) and wait for deals, which would be prices in the lower end of the range.

If you don't care about reissues vs originals, then you can wait for the reissues.

It will happen, too much money to be made...

It will also drop the price on originals.

I buy first issues/presses when I can. Apparently, the Ten-VS.-Vitalogy reissues do not sound as good as the originals. Used the digital masters for the reissues, from what I understand. Waiting for No Code and Yield reissues. 8-)

i bought the Vs and Vitalogy reissues separately from one another (not the expensive box set), but i am hoping that No Code and Yield are in a over the top box together.. i will def get the "uber" version of those two.. such a great, creative period for the band, both musically, and visually.

Yeah, I watched the PJ video from Letterman of Hail Hail yesterday - fucking awesome.

  • I'm in the same boat, and I'm very hesitant to shell out eBay prices for original presses of many of the albums since they could always release more reissues...I just don't see how they *wouldn't* re-press No Code, Yield et. al as they did with the first few albums...at least I hope they will...

I don't know if it's as definite as people think. It's not like PJ owns the masters to their recordings, if they did this would be a different story and the reissues would likely have already happened. Who's to say that Epic has any interest in reissuing albums that didn't sell that well to begin with. It's a financial risk for a label that isn't interested in taking financial risks. The albums that have been reissued were the bands best sellers, by far, so they can't be looked at the same way as the albums that followed.
I hope it happens as much as everyone else, I'm just not holding my breath.

It seems to me that No Code and especially Yield have gone WAY down in price lately (and of course Ten, Vs. and Vitalogy have, since they've been repressed, and some advice: get the originals - they are WAY better pressings than the reissues IMO, and Vitalogy isn't supposed to be on two discs). Yes, Binaural, Riot Act, Avocado, and Lost Dogs are up there, but, as so many people have told me, patience pays off. I keep seeing albums that I spent a bundle on going for way less than I paid not long ago. It's really just about luck. I don't regret buying anything I did when I did, but if I were a more patient PJ vinyl collector, I would have saved a fair bit of money by waiting for that perfect deal, which, btw, usually comes on Lost Dogs, not eBay. Discogs isn't too bad, but it's still other 10C members who offer by far the best deals (as it should be).

  • Wait for the reissues. Just grab Live on 2 Legs, RVM, and Lost Dogs since those are the ones that probably won't see a repress. It amazes me seeing albums that aren't even good like Riot Act and Avocado go for hundreds. You can get some kick ass box sets from other bands for less than that but hey, to each their own. If I were you I would just get RVM and that will cover a ton of material.

its true. as i said, i just picked up a $100 no code on discogs.. everything is complete, in terms of what is supposed to be included with the Vinyl, but there is a hefty bend in the top right corner... a mint/sealed no code goes for well over $200-250 on ebay.. so for $100 i can live with the thrashed corner... i dont LIKE it, but i'll live.

now i have this fantasy that when my replacement LB shows up, it will be red, and i can trade it for a lost dogs.

Yes, wait for the reissues and then buy the original pressings when the reissues make them go down in price. If the first 3 reissues are any indication, they aren't as good as the originals. And get Live on Ten Legs ASAP too. Those are still cheap, but probably won't be so much forever. Just got the box set for $60 on Discogs.
Also, RIOT ACT AND AVOCADO ARE AWESOME ALBUMS. :D

Can't really properly express how much I disagree with the suggestion that you just get RVM.

    totally agree!!!

riot act is possibly my fav to listen to in Vinyl. and i personally think Avocado sounds GREAT on wax.. so many people complain that it sucks. i feel like i have a pretty decent ear, and that album sounds great to me.

I got an unsealed but never played, like-new Lost Dogs for $175 here on these boards late last year. Judging from the prices on eBay for a red LB, you would be getting ripped off if you did that! ;)

Discogs.com is good to get a general idea of pricing.

Well that's pretty subjective. I like RA more than Yield, Avacado and Backspacer.
