Let's leave the drama behind and focus on the show a little more...

So, my impression of Saturday night's show was that the band was playing like they had something to prove to Los Angeles.

Eddie mentioned numerous times about playing in LA over 20 years ago... with Nirvana and the RHCPs.

And... so after all these years... PJ still blows up the place... the show started with probably the 3 best songs to start a show with. Powerful, emotional, and the energy stayed high the whole night. They were solid on every song!

My sense... PJ was never fully embraced by the LA music industry. And, well... on Saturday night... they played homage to thier over 20 year career... and said FUCK YOU to Los Angeles... and all the people in the industry that questions PJs ability to still rock!

That's just my 2 cents... it was an amazing show.

    02. Release
    03. Long Road
    04. Corduroy
(during the instrumental break of the song Ed sees a disturbance in the pit. He says on mic that there is “a problem down here that we need to get taken care of. Hey young lady, you need to get out now. Now! We will talk about it later but you need to get out.”
After the song Ed has the house lights turned up. He tells the woman again that she needs to “get out! Go watch the show from over there. Anybody else? Yeah you, out. You had a chance to make friends over here and with those people and you blew not get out. Marcel (security) get them out we aren’t fucking around.”)

    05. Lightning Bolt-(from the new album “Lightning Bolt”)
    06. Mind Your Manners-(from the new album “Lightning Bolt”)
    07. Why Go
(Ed has the house lights turned up and asks camera operator “Legs” to get a shot of this young girl. A very young girl being held up by her father is projected on the screens. Ed jokingly asks her if she was the one causing all the problems. He then directs his comments to the people that got moved, “we needed to get things settled and we didn’t have time for a long dispute.” Ed goes onto say that Springsteen convinced the band to play the Sports Arena because you can get the place rocking. “You are proving him right.”)

(Ed notes that even though they put out a record they really enjoy and are having a good time playing that “2013 has been a bitch. There have been so many tragedies. And if you don’t think it has been a rough year you might be next.” He talks about Hurricane Sandy and mentions the Hurricane that went through Manilla. He points out Rob, the man who received the check for aid relief at the San Diego show and says they are going to donate money from tonights show to Manilla relief as well. He also thanks the doctors that have been helping people through some very serious situations. He dedicates the next song the them.)
    14. Sirens w/ sing along outro-(from the new album “Lightning Bolt”)
    15. State Of Love And Trust (for the “myself, myself” in the bridge Ed gives the mic to people in the front who sing the part.)

    16. Jeremy

(“I think we can say without offending anyone that we could use a few more gun laws just to make us safer. It is a mental health issue and until we get that sorted out...I could tell it was the people in the back that wanted me to say that (referring to audience members behind the stage) I thought it was just Matt Cameron but it was everybody back there.
This next song has been mistakenly assumed to be about Rob Halford and (?) but it is a real guy named ‘The Leatherman’”.)

    17. Leatherman
(“Mike McCready was in the room below and this is how he woke me up this morning”)
    18. Eruption-(Van Halen)

    20. Rearviewmirror

    Encore Break 1

If it was a fuck you to LA it certainty wasn't towards the fans and concertgoers that night - save for a certain someone that I will not specificity for obvious reasons :D

I am glad the crowd was so responsive to the band, I have seen some shows where the crowds were pretty "hipster like" so it was great to see people rocking out at least where I was

Yeah, LA1 crowd energy was amazing. Better than any other LA show I've ever been to. Night 2 was good but noticeably a notch down. Ed never needed to prompt the crowd to get into it like he did a few times in night 2. Have always loved All or None (not "Alone or None" like someone in the locked thread called it). If someone would have told me they'd play one RA song during those three So Cal shows and it would be All or None I would have said they were crazy. Bring back Get Right! Anyway, sound and vibe were great where I was (Stone side standing next to and just behind Tim Robbins). Wow. Amazing.

  • I was at the LA1 show (should I bother nitpicking that Eddie didn't call 2013 a bitch, but rather a 'son of a bitch?' I know that doesn't matter but my eye twitches a little because I'm that kind of dork).

I enjoyed the show, as my 10th PJ show (11th if you count seeing Eddie solo in Vancouver, but I don't), but I feel like I'm getting too old. My 10c seats were on the floor behind the GA folks, so the view wasn't so great - at least not as good as I'd had it for the Universal City or Irvine shows when I've seen them out here before, but those shows didn't really have standing-room as I recall. Still, it was cool seeing Mike ducking and covering from the lightballs and Eddie riding one out over the crowd and generally feeling good-moody.

Set list was pretty cool, and it came close to giving me the goosebumps I used to get all the time from them, but again, I'm old. I felt they played with a lot of intensity but I wasn't feeling it as much as I'd like - possibly because I got a flat tire on the way to the show and I kept worrying about how I was going to deal with it once the show was done. So I was preoccupied (and thankfully, PJ has cool fans, and some folks in the parking lot helped me get it squared away afterwards). They played a lot of stuff I liked and not much of the stuff I'm indifferent about, so I'm grateful for that.

It was still very cool, and even though the friend I came with was pregnant, she enjoyed her first PJ show, too. I'm an absolute sucker for when the entire crowd is trusted to sing chunks of the song ("teenage wasteland!") and that is a great feeling to be right smack dab in the middle of that. That was the best thing about our seats - surrounded on all sides by loud, loving fans. Worst part is having a pregnant lady having to deal with weed dood dood weed weed dood dood weed guys.

I like the shows, I dig the music, but I guess I've reached an age where I'd rather have a personal connection with a song in my car than I would hearing it loud and live with thousands of other people. I'm not sure what my problem is.

I feel the exact same way.

I know this isn't going to be popular, but I think Ed talked too much during the concert. I like it more when songs are chained together and the flow of music is more natural.

Overall a great show though...

I loved this show... hearing Release brought tears to my eyes. I always get so emotional hearing that song. The set list was very heavy on TEN, but I had no complaints. Garden, Do the Evolution, Spin the Back Circle, Once, Porch. How could you go wrong? But the icing on the cake was hearing Footsteps. I heard it once before and have been waiting for it again, and it didn't disappoint.

    Loved the first show.

My favorite show I have had the privilege to attend. Well, maybe tied with Honolulu...

Garden brought goosebumps, and Release was extra heavy. Make a dream setlist, add it to everyone elses, put it in Ed's blender and see what you get. I think this one would make alot of fans appreciate being alive and would move some of us to tears.

I dont think anyone was ready for Ed to snap, but holy shit he beat the tar out of that guitar trying to blow off some steam before turning around and delivering a well appreciated rant to stupid people all over the world!

I dont mind Ed telling us pertinent stories, some of those really add to the current situation or explain the gravity behind choosing such songs.

I've only been to one other event in LA before, that was EV08, and there were a ton of knucklheads yelling out of turn bullshit like every fratboy wanna-be d-bag. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to knowing what to expect from certain cities/crowds, but I thought LA was spot on awesome! No problems for us and just what a rock crowd should be. None of those guys from the EV show must have been anywhere near us ;) Inside, outside, whatever. Traffic was traffic... I expected the worse and was pleased it all went so smooth. Actually, I didn't really think too much about the traffic, or anything else really. I was just ready to see the band and they really provided some emotional moments for us.

Thanks PJ, see you in Seattle!

Nice to see a reboot of this show fanview.
Agree with most comments and appreciate the reasonable tone of the posts.
Please save the drama for any of the many other threads.
Best LA show for crowd energy I have attended and thats in the 100's of concerts.
Thank You PJ for coming back to LA and playing 2 awesome shows!
  • here's some LA1 thoughts I posted in the LA2 thread, since LA1 is under review...

I've been to nearly all of the LA shows since 98, as well as MSG1 in '10, and I have to say LA1 is my favorite PJ show I've ever been to. Is it easy to call the most recent one your favorite? Yes. Could it also be because I was close up in GA for the first time? Possibly... But most of it is the fact that I've never seen this kind of energy and engagement from the band, and I've never heard Eddie's voice sound so consistently spot-on. Just phenomenal. And you know what I noticed both nights? I certainly saw a lot of wine consumed, but I didn't see one cigarette smoked. Now I don't know what he did during the encore breakes, or during Evenflow in LA2, but I was stoked not to see any smoking during the show, and I can't help but think his voice is showing the positive effects.

On Saturday, I knew from the moment he ranted on the girl up front, kicking her out, that we were going to get some ferocity from EV. And by the way, the girl shoved me and my wife on her way up to the front, dragging a kid and a guy with her. She was super aggressive and inconsiderate to everyone on her way up, I can only imagine how lame she was once she got there. Kudos to Ed for booting her and preserving the concert experience for those brave souls who'd spent all day in line to get on the rail...

All that to say - what a crazy, bad-ass, awesome couple of shows. I felt incredibly proud to call PJ my favorite band, and I found proud to call LA my hometown. We get a bad reputation for our crowds, but we brought it this past weekend, and so did the band.

Release is a very personal song for me and also brings tears to my eyes. Plus, you cannot open the set any better than the three-song suite at LA1.

Agree with everyone else who said it is the best L.A. crowd they have ever been a part of. I saw that as a 30-plus-year veteran of L.A. shows.
