Idea for an APP

So I think I may have an idea for an app, but I don't know how to get started. Anyone have any experience? I think I'd just want to give my idea to someone and let them develop it. What do I do first? Thanks.

If you are gonna hire someone to get them to develop it, then be prepared to give them a realistic timetable and pay. "50% of the profit" isn't gonna cut it. They are gonna need to be paid hourly if you really want this idea to come to life, which is gonna cost you. You can try to solicit freelancers on a couple popular sites, but again that's gonna cost you. If you want to just give your idea to someone with no strings attached, I'm sure you can find someone
My suggestion would be to try to code it yourself. If you have any experience with code, it isn't that hard. Takes some getting use to the SDK/IDE interface and all of the tools, but simple enough if you put in a couple hours a week you can get something going. First you need to pick which type of OS to code it for. (IPhone, Android, or Blackberry) My suggestion would be to definitely avoid Blackberry. IPhone is coded in Objective-C and Android is coded in Java. If you have the basics of these languages then pick the one you know, otherwise, pick the phone that you have. Go to the Apple/Android websites and download the SDK/IDE. This kit is the "Microsoft Word" of app writing.
There are so many useful tutorials/help sections/knowledge on the internet. Forums for asking questions, etc. If you really think this idea is 'top-tier' then investing some time and elbow grease would make it a reality.

I know nothing about coding but it sounds like you do. So obviously I'm gonna ask - do you want to do it? lol. No seriously - would you do it??
My wife is pretty smart. I think between the two of us we can do it.
So if we made this thing, do we just pitch it to the App store or something, and they would put it on there? Is it that simple? Sorry for asking more questions, but you seem to know a lot about it.

Well I was on an Iphone/Ipad app project in college for 2 semesters (Fall 2011-Spring 2012) so I learned the basics of how to get started, but I am very out of practice/"the loop".. I am not a computer science major that took loads of coding classes. I'm a mechanical engineer that took 1 C++ class and then decided to through myself into an Objective-C development project.
I'm not sure if I would do it or not. What are you looking to get out of it? What is the goal for the app? Are you trying to make money on it? Or just release something cool? Is it gonna be free to download? Are you gonna have ads on it? Will it be 'worth it' in the end? All things that I would need to think about before even trying.. and If I did try then it's gonna take awhile with no guarantee of success.
The whole reason when I took the project in college was to learn the basics of app development. I understand the concept, but don't have alot of experience with the practice of coding or implementation. Getting it into the app store would be the easy part. Actually writing it would be the hard part.. There is also alot of troubleshooting, bug fixes, data leaks, configuration control, and data storage that you need to worry about, depending on the specifics of the app.
For Apple you just pay $100 a year for a development license, and you can upload it after they review it so that it's up to their standards. For Android, it's free and I think they same review.

I think it'd be worth it even if it's not a huge success. Just seeing something that I came up with come to fruition would be very pleasing.
Not sure how many people would use it really. It is for when watching football, though.
I'd definitely make it for iPhones.
"There is also alot of troubleshooting, bug fixes, data leaks, configuration control, and data storage that you need to worry about, depending on the specifics of the app." - This part scares me, lol. Almost make me go "Okay, screw this. I'm out"
Hmmmm, well I'm gonna go noodle with this a little bit..
Thanks again for your responses - more than I expected to get, so thank you very much. : )

Yeah, "The first 90% of a project takes 90% of the time, the last 10% of a project takes the other 90% of the time."
Good luck! If you ever get something post it so we can see what you did!
