Laid Off Today

So, after 16 1/2 years at my company, I (along with hundreds of others) was laid off today. While I did get a 3 month severance package, I was completely shocked, and can't quite get my head around it yet. So much to think about....health insurance is my #1 concern, then what to do with the 401K, what happens if I don't find a job in 3 months, will I lose my house, etc.

Not having a pity party - maybe something better is out there and this happened for a reason. Perhaps a new adventure? Just trying to make sense of this and try to connect the dots on what I need to do.

Thanks for listening!

That happened to me. I haven't been able to get health insurance and the COBRA wanted half my income from unemployment. I'm not sure how severance packages work but if you get COBRA until Obamacare kicks in you should be alright.

I used it as an opportunity to go back to school full time during the day. Hopefully everything works out for you.

So sorry to hear that, been there. Best advice I can give is stay positive. I assume after severance you will get unemployment benefits, if nothing comes along sooner. Best of luck to you.

    Seriously, keep your head up!

I was laid off in July. Still looking. Keep your work search consistent. Sometimes it seems easier than other times. Give yourself a reasonable application number. I heard it was a hard time so I applied for unemployment through the state.

I hope it works out bettet for you!

back in '08, i was laid off twice in a 4 month span. it was brutal (though i actually enjoyed my time off as it coincided with the phillies world series run :) )....but then a few months later i landed the best job i've ever had and have been there ever since.

so i've been there. things happen for a reason. like someone said earlier, something better could very well be just around the corner. it probably is. just keep your head up and your eyes open. shit happens in life. you'll be okay. and if you have a family, make sure you don't take any extra second with them for granted.

    good luck!

  • So sorry to hear that. Good luck with your job search. Hopefully something good comes along quick. Stay positive and just keep applying. It's rough out there but hopefully you can get some unemployment benefits to help you in the meantime.
