Can any of our northern neighbors weigh in on this? Looks like a load of government abuse from this side of the story.

  • As you said it's just one side of the story. I'm sure there is a reason (even if it's a bad reason) that it's gone this far

honestly ... i don't know this story nor the facts ...

i do know that since Harper took over - we have become more and more like the US as it relates to gov't acting in the interests of corporate mandates ... this wouldn't surprise me ...
  • I hadn't heard of this either. The CFIA is more than a little zealous, owing to a spate of listeria and E. coli outbreaks in the last 5-6 years, although those were mostly industrial problems (insufficiently cleaned equipment). Scrapie is not good for a flock though, like fatal not good, but they seem to have been developing policy on the fly somewhat...

  • Montana Jones would do her cause a better service by providing the reasons the agency is trying to destroy her sheep. It seems suspect to me when the side pleading for help doesn't present the other side's argument/reasoning for what it is doing.

However, the needless slaughter of animals is disgusting to me. Especially since scrapie not transmissible to humans. However, it does pass to other animals. Does she only have sheep on her farm, or other animals/livestock that she sells commercially?

From limited resources available on Google, it appears she sold a sheep that died under the suspicion of scrapie.

DNR and FDA would do the same here. It's a pragmatic decision to prevent an outbreak.

but there would have to be definitive proof of disease and source. I believe US authorities would have several cases available to determine course of action. Some say we drag our feet in taking action. Salmonella , ecoli , etc. Mad cow disease comes to mind too.
It appears part of this is a lack of trust of and above board transparency on the canadian gov's part.
