This is a somewhat lengthy article (well worth the time to read, imho) so I'll just cut to the chase and paste only the first and last two paragraphs. I would love to see PJ throw some support behind this.

All around the globe, record numbers of people from all walks of life are being thrown into jails because they are standing up to protect the most basic of human needs -- uncontaminated water, unpolluted lands, and a liveable climate free from the ramifications of extreme fossil fuel extraction. If the greed-driven fossil fuel extraction corporations -- and the governments that do their bidding to assure sustained record profits -- don't stop endangering our critical and already-compromised life support systems, there is little doubt that the numbers of individuals standing up will grow exponentially. People are increasingly recognizing the critical necessity to safeguard our communities and our ecosystems, and growing numbers around the world are taking that bold step to engage in the time-honored tradition of peaceful civil disobedience as a means of alerting others to the dangers that threaten us all.

History has shown us that peaceful activism is vital when all else fails to respond appropriately to the most pressing issues of our time. The great practitioners of non-violent direct action as a means of achieving social change knew this and practiced it only with love in their hearts. Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr both said in so many words, "if a law is unjust, it is your responsibility to break it." MLK once said, "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." That one profound statement of moral genius succinctly exemplifies why the world must not be silent until the Arctic 30 are once again free.

Please stand in solidarity with those who were willing and compelled to go to the front lines on behalf of all future generations. The risks that these activists have taken, and the cost to them personally and to their loved ones, need you to relentlessly demand that Russia free the Arctic 30 -- and of course that the world move swiftly, urgently and in earnest to a planet powered by clean energy.

If you got to the link and click of the words highlighted in blue above in the last paragraph, you can sign the petition to free the Arctic 30. On-line petitions are only a small way to voice you opinion and each vote is only a drop in the ocean but like that great line from "Cloud Atlas" says, "What is an ocean but a multitude of drops?"

Five of them are out on bail ... surprising move by Ivan. Perhaps this is just a severe lesson by mother russia to put the fear of putin into them so they never come back.

20 are free on bail. I expect all will be granted bail, especially in light of the Sochi games coming up. They should consider themselves lucky.

interesting coincidence. I was at the video store tonight, and saw Cloud Atlas on the shelf. The title intrigued me. And now here I am reading this thread and came across it.

Looks like the Pearl Jam forum gods have spoken. I must rent this movie.

Oh, yes, "Cloud Atlas" is an incredible film. Who the heck knows what it's about but the same could be said for several PJ songs. Yes, in the Cloud, for sure!

'Tis the time for strange coincidences. Yesterday I started thinking about the book "The Politics of Experience" by R. D. Laing ( a "must read" for all AMT members. Yes, that mean you! You must read it! ). I didn't have a used copy in my inventory and walked into a thrift shop and there it was.

Monday we were in a small town on the coast and I was talking to a new books bookstore owner there who suggested if we moved our used book business to their area maybe I would do a Jimi Hendrix hour spot on their local radio station. Just as he said that the station they had on started playing Jimi's "1983... (A Merman I should Turn to Be)"

We are in the Cloud, Hugh.
