Friends of Mirto is a group of teenagers and young adults who have come to know 16 year old Mirto Papadomichelaki who was the victim of a great tragedy. On July 22, 2012 at approximately 7:15 p.m., Mirto was viciously attacked. Mirto, whose family lives in Athens, was vacationing in Paros at the time. While walking on the beach she was violently assaulted, beaten and left for dead. As a result of this attack, she has suffered severe brain trauma and spinal injuries. She is unable to walk or talk and is currently nourished through feeding tubes. These tragic injuries have drastically changed her life forever. It is hoped that through the therapy she is currently receiving, at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, here in Boston, she will one day be able to eat normally and communicate with the aid of the Tobii Speech Generating Device.
The doctors at the Spaulding have suggested that Mirto be taught to use the Tobii Speech Generating Device. She received some initial training but had to stop as the cost is prohibitive for her family. The cost of this machine is $25,000. The Friends of Mirto would like to be able to buy her this equipment, and do what we can to improve the quality of her life as well as make it a little bit easier. Her inability to communicate is very frustrating, and is causing her great distress.
The Friends of Mirto have approached the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of New England, Inc. (FHASNE), for their help and support. These young people have come to know her, and have expressed great compassion for her and her situation. The board has unanimously agreed to support them in their efforts.
We invite you to become Friends of Mirto and join us in our efforts. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Greek community to come together to support our youth and their efforts in this endeavor. In the same spirit of compassion which our young people have shown, it is our hope to see the entire Greek community come together in support of this worthy cause. With your support and generosity, we hope to buy the Tobii Speech Generating Device for Mirto. All funds raised above the cost of this device will go directly towards her extraordinary medical expenses. Your contribution is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
