The western black rhinoceros is extinct

It's a sad day for nature lovers and really the entire planet. The western black rhinoceros is officially extinct according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The last time one was seen was in 2006. The IUCN says the extinction of these magnificent beasts could've been avoided if proper conservation methods had been implemented. That wasn't the only bad news for rhinos in their report. Africa's northern white rhino and Asia's Javan rhino are fighting for survival due to poaching and a lack of conservation efforts. The report suggests managing and strengthening habitats could save the remaining rhino subspecies from extinction.

    On to the next animal.

Ironically, each one lost pushes ours closer to the top of the list.

The sad part is a lot of North Americans pay big $$$$ to hunt these animals in Africa ... and it's not for substance ... it's for the thrill and to have the animal on display in a trophy room. I get the hunting for food aspect, but will never ever understand spending hundreds and sometimes thousands to pay a taxidermist so you can display your the animal in a trophy room.

Trophy hunting is disgusting but it's not the reason these animals are extinct. Blame China and Vietnam with their bullshit beliefs in traditional medicine they're the ones responsible and more animals will wind up like the black rhino because of it.

The source link shows this occurred two years ago.

(doesn't take away from the sad fact of it...maybe it'll kick some folks in the ass, given our ability to forget these things)

From the original article, I wonder where we stand now on this:

The IUCN warns that other rhinos could follow saying Africa's northern white rhino is "teetering on the brink of extinction" while Asia's Javan rhino is "making its last stand" due to continued poaching and lack of conservation.

Yeah, probably mainly the b.s. medicine myths plus some due to hunting and always this problem: decreased habitat.

The gist: DALLAS SAFARI CLUB Duration: 00:06:45
It seems counter-intuitive: shoot a rhino to save a rhino. But that's the opportunity the Dallas Safari Club is offering.

It's auctioning off a special permit to hunt an endangered black rhino. The proceeds of the auction will go to Namibia's Game Products Trust Fund, to conserve the black rhino population.

Louisiana conservation lawyer John J. Jackson III is facilitating the donation through his charity, Conservation Force. We reached him in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Auctioning off permits to hunt an extinct species. Fucking brilliant.
