Wow! 20 years ago I saw my first Pearl Jam show. I had missed them in Del Mar opening for Nirvana and RHCP in '91.

I tried to get tickets for their two shows in San Diego for the Vs tour with no luck. So, I looked in the newspaper. Remember those? I found a pair of tickets for the Indio show. I think I paid $75 fot two tickets and they included Vs CD :)

It was really stressful driving there on a Friday afternoon with traffic from San Diego to Indio. We had provisions to keep the four of us busy on the way up. I think we were all very stressed hoping we would make it in time for Pearl Jam. To add to it,his car was making a rattling sound once we got into the parking lot. We screwed on the airfilter thing and we were good. We made it right inside right before PJ went on.

I pushed my way through the crowd and made it back to about 20-30 ft from the stage. They opened with "Release" and the crowd was already going nuts. At one point they had to play "Sonic Reducer" from behind their amps because all the bungholes in the crowd throwing shoes and shirts and sand. If you listen to the boot. You'll hear what I mean.

Someone in the crowd shared some smoke with me right before "Baba". At this point I felt I finally arrived. Then it was over. It was a crazy stressful experience, but well worth it. Check out the bootleg and the review from Five Horizons.

Please share your memories if you were there.

I too was there, my 2nd PJ show after seeing them on Halloween a few days prior up in Berkeley. Was a classic show and there were a mob of total dickheads there....immortalized by the shoe tossing.
I was also smoking away (at 19 there were not many things I didn't smoke for!) and jumping around like a maniac.
Was a great show as they were just on fire but it really paled by comparison to the Halloween show and how cool the crowd was up there.
Hell, cannot believe that was 20 years ago today.
I even hooked up with the girl who got us tickets I was so happy  , she remained a good friend throughout college.

Haha Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I bet Berkeley was better. Indio was definitely a unique show in that it was pretty chaotic. The band dealt with it pretty well except for Ed saying he and Jeff were going to beat everyone that was shoeless. They played and sounded great. I'm surprised they played a full set. It was ridiculous.

  • My 2nd show too. Cemented my love for these guys. Indifference was a call in the face of all of those dickheads that pj would persevere.

"Indifference" was a big stand out for that show. At the time I didn't think about it, but it makes sense what you said.

  • First show. Drove from Orange County out to the desert with some good high school friends. Remember them testing the pit playing RATM's "Bomb Track" between opening bands. Opened with Release and the the pit was swaying in unison. Ed then told the audience to take care of one another or something to that effect...and all hell broke loose when they started playing Go. The pit and fans were lousy (as Ed notes frequently on this boot for those who have heard it). Indifference and Baba were standouts for me. They also played Sonic Reducer, which later turned into one of my favorite covers by the band (thanks to the Atlanta 1994 boot) but for some reason didn't reasonate with me at the time. I was slightly bummed at the time that they didn't play Black. Still this show had a huge impact on me. I went home and in the next week joined Ten Club.
  • Saegent pepper tought the band to play?
  • I should have joined Ten Club after that, but for whatever reason I waited till '99

  • Wow, 20 years.... My first PJ show. Attended with my pregnant girlfriend (now wife) and about 15 other friends. Was completely blown away by Baba and Sonic Reducer. We spent about an hour after the show looking for the match to a shoe my girlfriend found and loved to no avail.... We will be attending all of the California shows this year, and will be with most of those same 15 people at LA 1...

    That's great!! Enjoy the shows.

I would have been going to the San Diego gig for sure, but I now live in Houston. I"m unable to make it to Dallas, so this will be the first tour I've missed since Vitalogy. I'm not counting No Code. It's a bummer, man. :?

  • Is there only one boot floating around for this one? It's pretty good quality, but it's weird because you don't really hear the audience much. Thoughts? In other words, I guess it's from the sound board.

Listening to this boot today. Funny for sure and weird without the audience noise. Just pulled into the school to pick up the kids and realized it was too loud as Ed was screaming "f*ck me in the brain!!"
