Am I allowed in the club if I like the song a lot, but not on the album Lightning Bolt? :P I think this would have made a great Xmas single.
Or better yet, a B-side to one of the singles from this album.

Remember when they used to do singles with non-album B-sides?

Has it been played on this first US tour leg?
    I don't think it has
    Nope.

Definitely like the song. And since I think I listened to Uke songs, maybe one time, it's effectively a brand new song for me.

I respect that some folks aren't thrilled that it is an alteration of an existing song, but I do not believe that anything got bumped for it. I.e. if SBM was not put on LB,the album most likely would have been 11 songs like Backspacer. If that perspective is true (which of course no one but the band knows) than it eliminates any reason to hold a "grudge" against SBM. :)

But damn, it is a catchy little tune for sure.
  • Ok, I think I might need to revoke my membership becauase I can't get this darn song out of my head

I do hope they play it on Leg 2. I'd perfer this over Future Days.

I started a new thread about this without realizing theres already a similar thread. Here's a copy of my post:

I know this is easily the least liked song off of Lightning Bolt by the majority. Somehow, the band seems to know this because they haven't played it live. I think Speed of Sound fell into the same category during the Backspacer tour.

I personally think the song is absolutely stunning. Love the lead guitar part (not sure who's playing). It makes me feel like I'm in 50's style Hawaiian resort.

So PJ, don't be ashamed of this one. It turned out great. Play it!!!

It's good, kind of sounds like a Christmas song too (a little bit)

  • I really like this song. Don't understand the hate or even dislike of this version. If anything, it shows the weakness in the Uke only versions. I said it before, if the Uke version was labeled a demo (which in effect it was) folks would love this song and be thrilled it was finally officially released. Can definitely see its place in the live rotation instead of Setting Forth at times.

And it's not like this hasnt been done before. Can any child of the 80s forget Don't Stand So Close To Me '86? now THAT was unnecessary.

I liked it a lot since first listen. The production is awesome and I love the guitar tone. Ed communicates the lyrics beautifully too. I'm in.

Me too. Why all the hate for this song a few weeks ago? People need to chill out. Pearl Jam can put whatever song they damn well please on their albums.

    THANKS GANG.
I would celebrate our momentous joining by making badges but something tells me that a "sleeping by myself club" badge would never be worn :lol::lol:

I would wear that badge. Love this song on LB. My wife kicked me out of bed last night for snoring, so I slept on the couch. So does that make me an official private member of the SLEEPING BY MYSELF club?

P.S. Why has this not been played live yet?

  • I haven't met a person in the flesh who actually enjoys this version of the song. I think you are all trolls!

    Just kidding.

That said, this one just doesn't click for me. I hate it, and I loved the Ukulele Songs version.
  • I like this version a lot. I am surprised that it hasn't taken off yet on the radio.

I wouldn't go that far. For me, the highlight of the record is Sirens>Lightning Bolt>Infallible>Pendulum>Swallowed Whole. Is there a better 5 song stretch on any PJ album?

  • It's a good song, but they pulled it out of storage covered in dust and mold, where as the rest of the album is sparkly and new.

    Yup!

Ten A: Once, Even Flow, Alive, Why Go, Black
Ten B: Jeremy, Oceans, Porch, Garden, Deep, and as a bonus, Release

Vs A: Go, Animal, Daughter, Glorified G, Dissident
Vs B: WMA, Blood, RVM, Rats, Small Town, and two bonuses! Leash and Indifference

Vitalogy: Last Exit, STBC, Not For You, Tremor Christ, Nothingman

No Code: Sometimes, Hail Hail, Who You Are, In My Tree, Smile

I'll concede from there, which actually puts in perspective how strong the record is.
