As I was driving to work today, "thoughts arose like butterflies": Where do you prefer the solo to be in a song?

The middle:

Animal
Go
Do The Evolution
Immortality
Brain of J

To name a few, or:

The End:

Corduroy
Severed Hand
Alive

Me, I prefer the middle cause it creates a nice division.

  • as you can tell by my username i'm always up for a good discussion about mccready solos. I'd actually say that mine are when they begin in the middle and continue throughout the end half of the song; some even have the added benefit of eddie singing over them. I like the classic middle solo, but at times it becomes too generic, unless of course the solo is extremely unique, for instance almost anything frusciante does on the new peppers is awesome. Anyway back to PJ:

You'll notice that most of these songs have moments where ed is singing and the solo is adding an awesome element to the song:
    help help
    animal
    black
    half full
    alive
    red mosquito
    nothing as it seems
  • That's a good question. I like both, but if i had to choose I'd probably say at the end. I don't think there's any Pearl Jam example of this but there is also the solo at the beginning: Cortez the Killer by Neil Young for example.

Well, with three of those songs, Half Full, Red Mosquito, and NAIS, you have the guitar solos throughout the song. The section that has the solos in these songs are just a certain section where the lead is always going. Red Mosquito and NAIS are two of my favorite songs as far as Mike's leads go by the way.
