Hold Me

On the bootleg Chapters, on side B there is a live version of the song, "Hold Me". It's nothing similar to "Hold On" from Lost Dogs, but the song is very powerful. I haven't read anything or ever heard anyone from the band speak of the song. Here is some of the lyrics:

Give me, Give me, what I, really need....
Give me, Give me, what I really need.....
Hold me, Hold me, Hold me, in my sleep...
Give me, Give me, what I really need....

Oh children in pain, suicide is all that's left...
Swearing is what begins my death...
Nothing left...

Give me, Give me, Give me, what I need....
Oh Give me, Oh Hold me, take it all away....

what i'm talking about,
what i'm talking about,
is just the promises,
or the doubts,

give me, give me, give me....
give me, give me, give me, what i need...

oooooooooooooooooh,
wooooooooooooooooh,
oooooooooooooooooh,
wooooooooooooooooh,

HOLD ME, HOLD ME, HOLD ME IN MY SLEEP,
HOLD ME, HOLD ME......

Song time: 3:59 mins

  • its one of those great improvs that turned into great songs in the act. like open road or fallin down. you dont get much of those from pearl jam these days.
    no son personas, son mujeres
  • Where can I hear this? Thank you.
"I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened"
  • I have no idea what version I have, but know that I've had it for many years. It never gets old!

Is that like the song "No"? I have a boot that labels a song called "No" and I don't see it on the PJ Song List. This has been bothering me for a while. I may have to start a new thread about it, if no one knows anything about it here.
"Underneath this smile lies everything - all my hopes, anger, pride and shame."

These are old boots from Europe and they tend to get the song titles wrong. My favorite is "Drop the Leaves."

    No:

Are you talking about the song that goes something like "she says no...etc" is that the date rape song? I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a Fugazi cover. Im too lazy to do the research.

Hold Me is one of the best improv. PJ has ever done.
It was played 93 11 03 and it is just incredible performance.
I just played it on my cd few hours ago!!

    I fucking love that song.
Same with Falling Down from 95 06 20.

Just forgot to mention something about Saying no.

They used to play it few times during 92 tournee.
It is also very good stuff.

Yeah I think that's it. I'll listen to it again just make sure. At least I know that it's a cover and not an original song.

Are you positive that Hold Me is an improv?

I think we need to discuss that the true definition of "improv" is? To me, it's something spontaneous that is rarely rehearsed. Judging from listening to the song, it seems to be more of a complete song than an improv. This is similar to "out of my mind" from 94, that was played more than once live. "Hold Me" as I mentioned before, strikes me as "Hold On". "Hold On" has never been played live, maybe once? But it's an official song.

It seems like it had been rehearsed before they played it.
I mean... the music and the lyrics really go together.
But it is an impovisation though...

Hold me has never been an official song of Pearl Jam.
It is stated as an improv....just like Falling Down...Meaningless...etc.

I can see your point, but I have a different view concerning what constitutes an improv. Whatever the case may be, I certainly don't care because the songs are amazing.

BTW, someone told me that meaningless and a few other improvs are actually Fugazi lyrics. Can anyone confirm this?

My all-time favourite is "Steal, Lie and Trust" :)

What about "Don't Go On Me" and "Garden Of Stone" from some of the earlier boots. The sad thing is, these apparent mishaps of the song titles occurred after the albums were released.

I'm still listening to "Hold Me" on a daily basis. Anyone fascinated with the opening riff, sort of like a buzz saw.

    is Fugazi's cover.
  • Any chance of getting a copy of Hold Me from anyone??
