Fully agree. Getaway is a solid song with a great vocal performance by Vedder and yet they haven't played it. Maybe on the second leg, which doesn't help anyone on the first. I've got three shows lined up and hope to hear it.

Apparently it was being saved for Charlotte.

  • On the rail last night in VA, holding up my Getaway sign, and Stone gave me a smile...wondering if I get the assist in Charlotte tonight? :D Hope you guys enjoyed it, I sadly missed it by one night. Damn. :)

Whatever you thought it would sound like live, it was 25x better. Totally worth the wait. Getaway was the highlight of the show for me!

Charlottesville and Charlotte got the shows Brooklyn and Philly should have gotten... I'll never understand. Philly might be their most stopped at city, that's where they really should focus on playing stuff that Philly hasn't heard. (Big Wave and Getaway)

I don't think it is by the city - I think it depends on how far they are into the tour - they get looser once they've done more shows on the tour, like they're comfortable and can take more chances, IMO.

You mean those mean guys in the band didn't cross reference their set list with every previous Philly set list to see what they "owed" you for songs? I for one am appalled that over the 4 nights to close the Spectrum, you didn't get to hear Big Wave. Those bastards. I knew they sold out years ago... this just proves it. They don't care anymore.

Because a super fan in Charlotte deserves only the hits? Big deal, a lot of people live in Philly and NYC so it isn't like they are special because they sell out. They just have a lot of people. It is a bigger deal that smaller cuties are able to fill these arenas than NYC with 15 million selling out the Barclays along with all of the travelers.

I wasn't at Philly, but those Brooklyn shows rocked. You don't need bustouts to make it a great show.

I went to both Brooklyn and both Philly- I would take all four of those sets over Charlotte.

As a former NYer, who has seen PJ in Philly, NYC and Boston for most tours, I can absolutely tell you with certainty that it is EXACTLY because you think Philly and NY are somehow more DESERVING of those shows than C'ville and Charlotte, that you did not get those shows.

I used to have mixed feelings about seeing bands in NY and Philly, where SO MANY BANDS play. On the one hand, the band's excitement at playing NYC usually made for brilliant shows, whether it was a bar band or the Rolling Stones. But audiences in NYC and Philly are also jaded as hell, they've seen it all, heard it all, and sometimes that can be a bummer.

Everyone has VERY high expectations of NYC shows. Sometimes it's just too much for all involved, the band and the audience.

C'ville was an unknown. Those of us who have been in that area a bit, some of us were worried the audience would be awful. Others were sure it would rule. But no one knew for sure... and I think the smallness of it and the "not-big city" ness of it gave the band room to experiement (hell, apparently Stone wrote the setlist! How often has that happened for a PJ show?).

NY and Philly do not deserve a certain kind of show. There is no "should" in what NY gets or what Charlotte gets. And the sooner you get that, the better a time youll have at the show you DO go to. Because, apparently, a LOT of people fucking LOVED Barclay's and Philly!
  • Has any video surfaced yet of the "Getaway" performance? I wanted to watch during my lunch break. :corn:

  • does not do the performance justice.
    was there mid pit.
I can tell you for CERTAIN, this song sounded FULL ON (not like Kevin's mom, though) and was ear bleeding good times.
There was nothing "missing". Only a real microphone on this poor camera.
Though you can not see it here, I promise you the pit was as off the chain as it ever got.
[too off the chain is just not possible anymore with out hurting women or what not]
    Bouncey bouncey.
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?
  • Ah, performance sounded pretty good. Did they play it in a lower key? I think so. Made it sound a little sluggish. Sure it sounded awesome in the arena. Looking forward to some better quality recordings. Hoping for it in Seattle.

    agreed.
and Dimi, he isn't responding to a troll, he is responding to a common mythology around the band that is false.
If people in semi-conservative central Virginia -- 20 miles east of Jerry Falwell Parkway -- can scream and pour out heart through an encore break until the band returns, while people in Philly\NJ sit and text their way silently through the main set break IN *EXPECTATION* of an encore, than the Charlottesvilles and State Colleges of this world will continue to get what they get (indescribable beauty), and the crowds of the North East can get exactly what they merely "expect" to be given- a pearl jam show.

Last nights show was awesome. Felt like the guys were making up for the 10 year absence from Charlotte.
But one thing still bothers me; Stone didn't play "Mankind."
    And today is my birthday.
I knew that Stone 'hated' me.
In this picture, perhaps you can make out the image of Stone 'giving me the finger.'
The red lights are also symbolic of Pearl Jam's hate for me.

You’ve completely ignored the point while on your soapbox. PJ played in Baltimore recently for the first time ever. Baltimore should get a set heavy with popular PJ songs, and they pretty much did. That’s just logical. Now take the cities that PJ has played at ~20 times (NYC and Philly), they should get some more obscure songs that they haven’t heard yet. Again, that is only logical, especially from a band that claims to take in to account what was played in that city on previous stops.

None of this means that the Philly shows weren’t great concerts, just that they could have been better. (Despite what many ironically believe on this board, the band is not infallible.) I don’t know how anyone could disagree with that. So please stop assuming that means anyone didn’t have a great time at the concerts.
