Lou Reed, a massively influential songwriter and guitarist who helped shape nearly fifty years of rock music, died today. The cause of his death has not yet been released, but Reed underwent a liver transplant in May.

fuck, that's sad to hear, what a band, what an artist

"Glam, punk and alternative rock are all unthinkable without his revelatory example. "One chord is fine," he once said, alluding to his bare-bones guitar style. "Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz."

He was pretty up there in years, and had some health issues recently, but it's still shocking news to me.

  • Sad news indeed. I'm actually currently listening to Lulu, the collaboration album he did with Metallica in 2011. Not surprisingly, it was badly received by fans and critics. I'm listening to it for the first time and strangely enough, I actually like it. May he rest in peace.

Yeah, this one is weighing on me, too. When they're no words, perhaps we should listen. Time to spin some music.

Great idea Hobbes. I think I'll put on "The Blue Mask", one of my favorites.

Wow, what a kick in the guts! Was just discussing him with a work colleague a few days ago. We were talking about artists with two separate musical careers which had both been a huge success. Lou was the first one which came to mind. What an absolute legend of a man. Absolutely shocked and gutted. I wonder if Ed will pay tribute with a cover tonight?

Sad, sad loss for the world of music. His influence transcended genres and he inspired so many to start bands. RIP, Lou. You will be missed.

I'm going to give Rock and Roll a good listen, and then maybe some White Light, White Heat.

Also just read that John McVie has been diagnosed with cancer and Fleetwood Mac has cancelled their Australian and New Zealand shows so he can undergo treatment. Not a day of good news in the classic rock world.

  • One of my favorites. I think the first artist i listened to to branch out of the grunge alternative style. Him and the Pixies. But Lou was something special. Was able to see him a few years ago on my birthday, maybe not the best concert i ever saw but there was no question Lou knew rock and roll. Always thought The Pixies references to Lou, and Lisa Says, in I've Been Tired was, one of the finest acknowledgements of greatness in rock.

  • Lou embodied the NYC of his time: attractive yet somewhat ugly, dangerous, cultured, belligerent, aloof, charming, rough, tantalizing, intelligent--there for you w/all that you needed and may not have wanted, but it all came w/the package...I miss THAT NYC and will miss Lou as well. May his soul rest in peace & then come back and kick some more ass.

I've been walking around slightly catatonic all afternoon, balling like a baby on and off.

Nicely put. Yeah, started my day in tears and ending my day in tears.

    We'll miss you, Lou.

  • A huge loss.
R.I.P Lou Reed, a man who introduced adult themes and the darker side of humanity to rock music. In effect being responsible for the paradigm shift from the typical Beatle-esque songs of the day and influencing everything since, from punk, metal, alt-rock, grunge that have dominated rock music since.

    :(

I am about to embark on a Velvet Underground and Lou Reed solo listening spree this week.
