Questions about living in/around Bremerton

Anyone around here live in or is familiar with Bremerton? I have a possible job opportunity there. I lived in the Seattle area in the early 90's and have always wanted to go back. But I know that was a long time ago and every town is a bit different. Is it really isolated? Family friendly? I see most people take a ferry to get back and forth to Seattle. What's the housing market like? Cool things to do and see? Any information would be helpful!

I haven't been out there for quite a while, but from what I remember:

*it's pretty cheap to live there-compared to Seattle currently I see a 3bed/1 bath 1125 sq ft house for $925/month (compared to a 3bed/1bath 950sq ft for $1950/month)
*it's a Navy town, lots of military families
    *lots of antique stores
*you can either take the ferry 1 hour to Seattle, or 'drive around' an hour and go across the Tacoma narrows bridge. <----it is now a toll bridge, so it will cost you money either way to 'get out'.
*it has a 'small town' feel-the word 'quaint' comes to mind. It is by Port Orchard and Poulsbo, also very 'quaint'.

It's not on my radar as a place to 'see or do' something, unless I want to go to antique stores. If you like to go and see stuff, do things, I would consider moving to Tacoma and making the commute to Bremerton-that's only 35 miles, maybe a 45 minute commute.

Are you able to come out for a weekend and scope out the area? That would be best as I don't know what you are specifically looking for.
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

Thanks for the info! That was kind of the vibe I got from what information I found. Good to know it's closer to Tacoma. It sounds like a great place to work and visit. Small towns are kind of hit and miss for living though. If the job opportunity is serious I will plan to scope out the town first. I'm married with two young kids so that plays in to my decision heavily. We love the outdoors and pedestrian friendly towns too though, so who knows.

There seems to be a lot of low end housing in Bremerton. Is this mostly Navy families? What's Gig Harbor like? Just looking at what options are within like 30 minutes or so of Bremerton if I'm not feeling it there.
