Subj: Hello. Dave Abbruzzese here... 95-07-26 08:44:51 EDT
From: D765478658
I've read it all....
I am fascinated & sometimes flattered...
There are people in this folder who know that this is really me, so I
won't spend alot of time trying to prove it to the rest of you.
If you'd like proof....WRITE me a letter at ;
Dave Abbruzzese
P.O. BOX 99410
Seattle. WA.
98199 fax 206 283 2702
I am signing off this screen name from AOL.....
...to my friends: you can still reach me under me other screen name.
After seeing that modern drummer article, I felt the need to add to it
some additional bits of info....
....writers, no matter how good they are always add their own bits...
Everything in that article is true. YES, they're based on my opinions, and
some may think that my opinions are tarnished with bitterness....
they're not.
I will never get over that period of my life. I learned alot from it
that will help me in my future, but I will not/nor do I have any desire
to/ get over it.
This was a situation in which I had no choice. I knew that Ed and I
had trouble communicating, but I blaim Ed...always did.
When he would toss a persona formed monkey wrench into the pearl jam
spokes, I was the one who asked the question of "why?" out loud, to his
face. While the others just accepted his trip. This made me the
challenger to his motives. While all the while, I just wanted a reason.
As far as the seemingly obvious disagreements between my goals of
giving back to the people who gifted me with the oppurtunity to actually
live and play music and Ed's belief that in my doing so, I was promoting
myself, I say SO WHAT. I always kept, or at least tried to keep all the
members of PJ informed as to what I wanted to do with my time and my
abilities. And I also made sure that they knew that my attitude was one
in which, "If you have a problem with what I want to do, and don't
approach me with your reasons for that problem, well, ...then it's not MY
problem." A person cannot live their life walking on eggshells just
because some others cannot speak their intentions clearly. There were
many other contributing factors, but they don't matter any longer.
When I was FIRED over breakfast {not lunch} by Stone, I was devistated.
I was oblivious to anything of the sort transpiring. As a matter of
fact, I called our manager Kelly just the day before, because I was told
that Ed was back from getting married, and I wanted to wish him luck on
his upcoming trial for the fight in New Orleans. Kelly, who I considered
a dear friend, as well as MY manager was his usually happy self and we
had a pleasant conversation that ended with him telling me that Stone
wanted to talk to me. I called Stone. He called me back the following
morning and invited me to breakfast. I got there, he was late, came in,
said my name in greeting, and the next thing he said to me was:
" WE"RE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER DRUMMER."
I then over the next week or so recieved many excuses, but no reason.
Jeff called. Mike called from rehab. { where he also attended the meeting
discussing my firing via speaker phone.} I never once heard from Ed, and
still haven't a year
later.
I learned alot within that group of people. A hell of alot. I love them
all, and I always will. I miss them. I wonder if things have changed.
I've heard some bootlegged shows of the new PJ....and though I've always
had alot of respect for Jack as a drummer, I hope for his sake they put a
new record out soon, with him playing HIS style of drumming on it, 'cause
from what I've heard on these boots...........
Well, thats all. I'm in a great head-space right now. I formed a new band.
The record's finished, and I'm very proud of it. You'll know when its
around. Keep your love for music alive. When the glass house of persona
is shattered, all that remains is the reality:THE MUSIC.
Write me,bye all.
Peace & Smiles

I always feel that Dave A. is the unfinished business of Pearl Jam....maybe they can do a drummers reunion tour and have 243423 drum kits set up and everyone play at once...also, I had totally forgotten about the
    alt.music.pearl-jam days!! Love it.

great guy. amazing drummer. just heard the 4/2/94 boot on PJ Radio today and couldn't believe how good the guy was.

Obviously he was the anti-Eddie. dude always grinned, loved guns, loved being famous, etc. in 1994 being around Eddie who was trying to form his persona that was a no-no. Oh well. They might have imploded and we would'nt have No Code or Yield. He was awesome though.

I know a lot of people think PJ was better with Dave as their drummer. If he was fired for wanting to be successful and he's so talented, what has he been doing since he's left PJ?

I realize that, but he really seemed to want to be famous so I always thought it was strange that he never hooked up with another big band.

I remember when he originally posted this, and I even remember his AOL screen name at the time. We conversed a bit via email after this went up, but there wasn't anything super interesting to add to the thread now. He was really excited about the Green Romance Orchestra record, and seemed a bit defensive/bitter, which, while only my memory of the perception I had way back then, wouldn't seem totally unexpected. Dude was fired from the biggest band on earth without any head's up. I hope he's doing well.

He got the rawest of deals. Had a future he had an important part of building taken away from him (and from us who enjoyed his playing), and then the band (who held the megaphone) lied to the fans about it. The old music has never been played the same since. The music written since then has been a series of left turns away from those albums and live shows with Dave. Not seeing a show with him is probably the one thing I could change in my life if I had to choose one thing (as I'm a drummer, and a gigantic fan of the band with him playing).

Totally agree; I wish I could have seen him. My first show was with Jack and I don't really like his drumming. Dave A is amazing. If Matt would add some of Dave's cymbals I would be much happier.

If he would just get the right groove, I'd be happy. Square peg / Round hole. But we don't have to make this a comparison thread. Maybe just a "Dave appreciation" thread. :)

My friend and legendary drummer David Abbruzzese is in the studio cutting tracks for my solo record, "Champion". You talk about the best, most influential drummers of the last twenty years and DA is in the first paragraph of that conversation. Swing away my brother…SWING AWAY…. — with David Abbruzzese.

Love Dave A. He's a big part of the reason why I think '94 was the best tour PJ has ever done.
"What can you expect when you're on top? You know? It's like Napoleon. When he was the king, you know, people were just constantly trying to conquer him, you know, in the Roman Empire. So, it's history repeating itself all over again."

The chance to be in a band like pearl jam is an extremely rare occurrence. It was one in a million to begin with, just because he didn't change the face of music A SECOND TIME, doesn't mean he is not an incredible talent.

All the guys in the band, past and present, are very talented, but Eddie is the reason they are famous, and set apart from others. Dave A just never found another Eddie

dave a is definitely my favorite pj drummer, and while eddie im sure was a p.rick back then, dave really only has himself to blame. eddie was/is the leader of the band, hes the main reason they exploded like they did, hes an amazing singer/lyricist. dave should have just thanked his lucky stars he hooked up with this band and this singer and kept his mouth shut. as he said in that email, eddie was taking control of the band and nobody else said a word. why do you think that is dave? BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE BIGGEST REASON FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE BAND WAS EDDIE! they werent gonna risk giving that up by clashing with eddie. dave did though and he got fired because of it.

That's because PJ's music is written around the drummers of the moment, and what they bring to the band.

I`m not so sure. The songs would sound different for sure but i think it could work. From time to time i play a long some newer songs and try to do them Dave style and i think it could be pretty great. Some funk would suit those songs really well!
