Anti-government anger fuels long-shot Maryland breakaway bid

WESTMINSTER, Maryland (Reuters) - Scott Strzelczyk is fed up with what he calls political slavery in Maryland and sees one way out - creating a breakaway state, a feat that has not been accomplished since the American Civil War.

Riding a wave of anti-government sentiment across the United States, the small-town information technology consultant has launched a long-shot bid to get Maryland's five conservative western counties to secede from the state, one of the most liberal and Democratic in the country.

"We think we have irreconcilable differences, and we just want an amicable divorce," Strzelczyk, 49, told Reuters after pitching secession to the We the People Tea Party group in Carroll County, a county he hopes will be part of the split.

Strzelczyk's breakaway bid is unlikely to be a serious threat to the state, since it faces nearly insurmountable obstacles. But he is not alone. His Western Maryland Initiative is just one of several secession proposals that are emerging across the United States.

More of this needs to happen.

More chaos in a country plagued with chaos. I suppose there is a sort of ironic logic if one is prone toward pushing things toward collapse. No doubt many radical thinkers would agree with you. These, however, may be the first ones to complain about the rubble.

So you have an issue with people wanting to be free of never ending and oppressing government? People that want to live free of being told what to do every minute of their lives?

Not at all. What ever state I'm in, I'm already there.

    That's fine.

I just don't understand why liberals have an issue with this. You're in a club that some want to leave, so let them leave and start their own club. You still have yours, your rules remain the same. They want to have a different set of rules. What so wrong with that?

I always kind of laugh when people call me a liberal. I think Hodge-podge might be closer but, please, no labels.

As for creating separate states- really? So if I want to live somewhere, it should to be where like-minded people also live? So then maybe we need to have different countries. Or better yet, different worlds.

But seriously, to my way of thinking until we would do better to learn to live in bio-regions and ecological communities rather than arbitrary political boundaries that have little to do with how we live in the real world. When I go north to visit my father in Oregon and cross that political boundary between California and Oregon, I see nothing but a sign on the highway. Geographically, there is nothing there that changes. Absolutely nothing. I often think to myself what a pointless and silly thing that so-called state line is. How useless and pointless in terms of the real, natural world.

I wasn't implying you directly, it was more of a generalization.

I'm looking to move and when I feel ready financially I'll be doing so. There shouldn't be a need for another country if this country ran how it was intended to.

That's cool. So what do you think of my boundaries ideas?

Honestly I get the whole no borders thing, but I don't believe it would work. We'd have to cease being a welfare state first, plus I do believe in state sovereignty. I believe in states rights. I believe the federal government has become too powerful and is no longer constitutionally sound.

The no borders thing is my main disagreement with the libertarian party. I just don't believe it will work until we no longer give out endless handouts.
