    And another observation...
The 1st 30 or so seconds of Lightening Bolt remind me a lot of Unthought Known...
building and BUILDING!!!!....ya know what I mean...

Then all of a sudden it quickly and sadly takes a U-turn.

But then it makes a recovery...
    Somewhat.
    :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Give it a listen after the first chorus/Mike's first small solo, at the, " Always something and never nothing
isn't that the way we're taught to be, to be" line.

Thats where this song takes off. Big fan of this one.
And so you see, I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
    I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

Ed reaches some female R&B type shit during these lines:

    Of everything thats possible
in the hearts and minds of man
Somehow it is the biggest things
that keep on slipping right through our hands

    By thinking we're infallible
    we are tempting fate instead
time we best begin here at the ending

Funny that you said that. I heard somebody comapring it to a Christina Aguilera song. And now I hear it too, especially with those lines :?

Sorry to everybody in advance for planting this thought in your minds :P

I still think it's a great song and I hope we get to hear it tons of times during the fall tour :D

I can't stop playing it over and over. a little like Tremor Christ's and Army Reserve's love child, and then on steroids. Amazing.

I keep thinking some rapper is going to get ahold of the intro music and do a rap song on top of it one day.
You're right. This song does have a little hip hop feel to it.

Yeah, thought I heard that, too. "You're beautiful" --> "we're infallible", but still doesn't take away from the song. It's brilliant. It's all Pearl Jam.

    :Edit:
Just read the Huffington Post interview with Ed and he talks about pop music, especially empowering songs directed towards women, maybe because he has girls, so perhaps on some level that song infiltrated his brain. Sometimes we can't ask where inspiration comes from, it just comes. :)

I'm having a hard time with this lyrics, being non native speaker is more difficult... to me it doesn't sound like Pearl Jam at all, that's what makes it even a better song... but the second time I listened to it I heard the strumming like the tremor christ one, one of my fav songs of my all time fav album...

    LOVE IT!

  • More like impeccable. This is one of the best melodies in a PJ song ever. The overall melodic structure between the music and lyric melody is on another planet. an appropriately titled song. blown away

I think he's talking about the fact that all sorts of horrible things are happening in this country and in this world, all of these tragedies and mass murders, natural disasters, etc. and most people just shrug and say "Oh well, it wasn't me" and just keep living their lives like nothing happened, ignoring the fact that things just seem to be getting worse. That's my interpretation anyway, and if that's what he's saying, I say well done, Ed.

One of my favorite songs on the album so far.

This song could be one of the best of their entire catalogue. The music and words...just work perfectly.

My absolute favorite part: "You think we've been here before......you are mistaken".
