Can someone explain server side emulation?

I have been trying to stay up to date in the ps4. I was reading an article that said the ps4 will not be backwards compatible but will be able to play ps3 games through online streaming and sever side emulation. I'm new to this topic and was wondering if someone could explain how this would possibly work.

  • sounds like alien nation to me.....
  • Isn't that just "Sony-talk" for cloud gaming?
You contact a PS3 "emulator" via your connection and play the games on a server, so you don't have to download it, just stream it?
I could be wrong but that is what I've gathered from the next gen consoles. And how we've seen these days in the many MMORPGs - the game is being run (for the most part) on a server, and there are none to little installations on your side.
Have fun, walk hard and stay alive.

OK. My PhD is on Digital Preservation. There are three main categories of digital preservation approaches: 1) Migration, 2) emulation and 3) hybrid approach (see KEEP project). To put it simply, emulation is the technique that allow us to play a Super Mario '95 game (used to be a console (Atari) game) on our 2013 PC and get the exact same feeling. Using the aforementioned technique, we manage to render a digital object (in our case a video game) in its original environment, while at the same time the original bitstream remains unaltered.
