People's thoughts on KROQ (those in Los Angeles area)

For those of you in LA/OC, what's your opinion on KROQ and the fact that this station had shunned Pearl Jam since the days of No Code. They're not even mentioning or even playing anything from Lightning Bolt. But they'll play the hell out of these poser bands who were influenced by our boys from the Pacific Northwest.

There is a woman DJ in the afternoons that talks up PJ very well. I heard MYM when it was released.

In general, listening to KROQ is like sifting through a turd the day after a dog swallowed your diamond. I guess many stations are like that. Just part of listening to something that others try to put out. On the good side, you may hear something that you never heard of that you end up liking. I'd rather not listen for something PJ to be played as the main intention. Rather to see what's new.

Which L.A. Station plays anything from Pearl Jam other than Alive, Evenflow, Jeremy, Black, Elderly Woman Behind the Counter In a Small Town, Daughter or Last Kiss?
    ...
    The correct answer is: None.
    ...
Anyway, at the very least, KROQ is not as horrible than KIIS/FM or those crappy Country and Christian Rock stations.

  • They do play the "hits", I recall fairly recently hearing Betterman (or maybe that was 98.7 FM), but I definitely hear them on KROQ every now and then

Although I try my best to avoid FM radio, there is not a single station that really extends beyond the generic playlists with the same ol' songs. KROQ and 98.7 have highhandedly ruined many decent recent rock songs for me: Madness by Muse, tons of Black Keys tunes, etc. They play them into the ground and it sucks

    All of radio does this.
These 'Classic Rock' stations... they play the same shit over and over again... and they have a HUGE selection of album cuts to choose from. Like, WHY keep playing 'Won't Get Fooled Again' over and over and never play 'Pure and Easy' (from 'Odds and Sods')? Play 'Fearless' from Pink Floyd instead of 'Money'... 'Seven Seas Of Rhye' from Queen instead of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'... 'Thrasher' from Neil Young instead of 'Heart of Gold'.
    ...
And KROQ listens to and plays what their listener requests. That is why we all get to listen to what bored teenagers with smart phones and nothing better to do all day want to hear... over and over again. That is why every 20 minutes we get that 'Imagine Dragons' song.

I only listen to radio for anything exclusive like an interview or in-studio performance, or giveaway of something I'm interested in. Beyond that, I curate what I want to listen to with my music library or Spotify.
  • In 2003 when PJ announced they were going to try to play every one of their songs in the 3 Boston shows (I think it is now known as "the experiment"), I thought that was great. Just another reason, in the long list of reasons, that being a fan of this band is unique. However the morning DJs, Kevin and Bean, thought that the idea was insane. They couldn't even understand why they wound want to do that, much less how cool of an idea it was. One of them even said something like, in an astonished tone, "What are they thinking?" I rarely listened to KROQ since. And I feel fine.

What's probably a factor driving the fact that recent PJ doesn't get as much radio air play is the business side of things. Labels are still influential. You can imagine them promoting the shit out of bands like Muse, Fall out Boy and etc.. I also wouldn't be surprised if there are some back room deals involved. Since PJ is basically doing things on their own, without oversight from a record company, they probably don't have much time to devote to pushing their stuff to radio. With Lightning Bolt, I think they partnered with Republic Records so maybe that'll help push radio. It also doesn't hurt to write songs with hooks :) . Sirens should get decent radio play.

They played the singles from S/T and even the Fixer a good amount upon release. They even did a radio show for KROQ at the Fonda on the S/T tour. I imagine either there are politics at play or something else is up. I can understand why Sirens wouldn't be played on there but MYM would have at least done decent

I swear, if I heard the Lorde track one more time on either 98.7 or KROQ......

Very disappointing lack of love coming from both of those stations, or any LA station as mentioned, for MYM or Sirens. I have yet to hear either...

I hate KROQ. They just suck anymore. I listen to 100.3 the sound. They play the usual pj songs. But they play them. There's an IE station 103.9...can't remember the call letters. But I get that sometimes and they play a little deeper into the catalog. I still have a trial of xm right now so lots of pj radio and lithium. Public radio in General is just a joke anymore. I miss indie...
  • For modern rock all there is KROQ and ALT 98.7...
Though in some parts of LA/OC you can get a true rock station...
91X is by far the best station for new modern and alternative rock. It's in San Diego put in some areas it comes in clear. Because there still independently owned they get to play what they want.

I don't know a whole lot of people that actually tune into the radio as a first option. Most people I know use Pandora or other streaming platforms. Radio is dead IMO. The days of a DJ playing what he thought was good are long gone.

Don't fall into the trap of generalizing from your own experience and that of your peers. The audience for terrestrial radio still dwarfs the audience for streaming.* Commercial radio may be crap, by and large, but never underestimate the tastes of the American people. The average music listener wants and expects to hear the same narrow playlist of songs and does not like to be "challenged" with anything new.

There was a radio station in Boston 10 or 15 years back that used the slogan, "Songs You Know By Artists You've Heard Of." It was a highly rated station. The slogan always made me laugh, since every song-- even your favorite song in the whole world-- was once a song you'd never heard, and every artist was once an artist you'd never heard of. If those were your criteria, you would literally never hear anything. What it reflects is that most people stop seeking out new music after around the age of 17 and, for the rest of their lives, they prefer to listen to what they liked when they were young.

As for KROQ, it's a commercial radio station that takes its cues from its corporate overlords at CBS. Where it was once a leader, it is now a follower. KROQ is not breaking artists anymore. It has a narrow, practically sclerotic playlist, and only when a song has established itself on radio elsewhere will it have a chance of breaking in, except for a few select artists which Pearl Jam is no longer among. They picked up "Sirens" because it was exploding in other markets. The programming is done by computers based on focus-group testing, and the DJs have little control over what they play. Believe me, if it were left to the KROQ DJs, the station would sound a lot different (and a lot better).

It's sad. If you're in the L.A. market, try KCSN-88.5 if you can pick up the signal or 100.3 (The Sound) as someone else already recommended.

    * I call this the "NCIS Fallacy." It's very possible that you don't know anyone who watches "NCIS," and yet "NCIS" is the highest-rated scripted show on television.

Visited a friend in LA for about a week a couple years ago and heard a lot of KROQ. They play an obscene amount of RHCP. It's like, her, we get it...the chili peppers are from California.

KROQ is a horseshit station. They never play good stuff. They like all the bs rock. They are up their own ass 99% of the time.

Funny you should say that, because when I was referring to "select artists" in my post above, the first one I had in mind was RHCP.
