While it’s possible to make sense of why “non-essential” employees are sent home and other services are closed during the government shutdown, it continues to boggle the mind why websites, the operations cost of which are negligible, have been shut down.

No, it really doesn't boggle anything. The government shutdown. That means actual things, like federal offices, national parks, government websites, also shut down.

What did these people think was going to happen when the government shutdown? Nothing was going to close? That boggles the mind.

Of course it needs people to run it. You think a website just runs on it's own? You think a government-run website that's under constant cyber-attack and actually has to have moderators monitoring it 24/7 just magically runs itself?

Her personal staff aren't government employees. They're all paid for by the Obamas themselves. So her staff are all still working.

Unless you're talking about the people on White house staff who also work with the First Lady. In which case there are 24 people who are on her staff and yes... many of them aren't working now but some of them are.
