HI,

To be honest I am a bit disapointed on how things are going with the marketing associated with the new album...

Those facebook posts like "LIKE if you are excited with the new Pearl Jam album!" WTF? I feel like I'm Justin Bieber fan or something...

Now the new interview video with Carrie.. we need to like IFC facebook page in order to see it... Really? This is just getting worse...

It just don't feel like Pearl Jam to me...

Really? If Facebook exsisted in the 90's they would have been using it. Pearl jam is releasing new music for the first time in 4 years, be happy and excited, why let yourself be upset about such minuscule things.

Where did I say I was against facebook? Right.. I didn't say it.

I am super-excited with the new album. Does this mean I cannot have an opinion? I believe I can :) It's just that.. an opinion

You're absolutely right. They should stick to promoting through trusted music resources like VH1 and MTV. THAT is where you will connect with your base, not the hundreds of thousands of people connected through social media networks. BRING BACK OLD PEARL JAM

    DROP THE LEASH!

Once again.. I am not against the use of Facebook. Just how it was used in these 2 specific cases..

    Cheers.

But you put 3 "marketing"'s in your title.

  • It's interesting you bring this up. I was just telling someone the other day how impressed i have been with Pearl Jam's marketing for this album. The constant video drops on youtube have been fantastic. Very well done and great marketing. Its so much better than them doing nothing. They are doing marketing in their own way which i think is great. The portlandia thing doesn't bother me. Don't forget that Carrie was in Sleeter-Kinney. They are marketing their band but doing it in a way where it helps out their friend which is a very Pearl Jam thing to do. They are very loyal to their friends.

Didn't knew about the "Sleeter-Kinney" thing..

I just wanted to see the video and at the moment I have no facebook access:)

Still,I do not resume all the marketing capaing to this 2 cases. I agree with you, this has been a very good one... I'm just talking about these two things in particular:) Maybe now it's just one after your post.

Not to mention they baited the hook 80-90 days ago witht he Tour Announcement vid. I think the lead up to this thing has been great.

The song title reveal with the pictures and vine clips were awesome!
Enjoy difference. Without it we're all boring!

  • For me the first countdown was great :) Was not expecting it
"sometimes i reach to myself dear god"
  • very professional work at this album...alot of work from alot of people..
    all,the videos,countdown was great.
and ill say again, here in the pj official site must put the infos -news first and then,at facebook,twitter,etc..
all members has access here,so no need anyone has other acounts at social media to get anything around the band...
i know millions has access to facebook, but i believe the mebers need to get first and all the infos
and still dont get why they dont use for everything the PJ Radio..this is the most weird of all..
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

I think they should've cut a month out the lead up, but otherwise it's been some cool stuff. For me it should be a steady climb up to the release, but there was a pretty big lull between the announcement and any real marketing.

I agree with the last bit. That was a very good way to introduce both the tracklist and the artwork and get therefor a sense of the album...

I wonder if the band will play anything on TV.

Most of the marketing seems to be targetting at US. IE PJ's existing hardcore audience. We get emails about the youtube vids and happenings, so to us it seems like the advertising is everywhere, but in reality it isn't.

The facebook thing makes sense (but is also eroding the facebook experience). When you like something it shows up in your newsfeed, so you friends end up seeing it in their newsfeeds. If they like it spreads out like that. So they kind of reach other people that way (as facebook is designed to share the things your friends like).

I guess i've liked a few bands and tv shows and have gotten used to it. Social Media is a way to get out info to people without putting expensive ads on TV (which are becoming a more useless form of advertising with each passing day).

It could be the downfall of social media though. If it all becomes advertising then it gets a little annoying. You should see the amount of crap Breaking Bad has been posting to my newsfeed this week :)

I agree, however, I didn't see that "Like if you are excited", had I seen it, I wouldn't have liked it anyway, also, don't take Facebook or this thing in particular to seriously...

Regarding the IFC, since I live outside the use, I was intenrested when people started talking about eddies cameo on Portlandia, I was eager to watch it: 30 seconds of my life I would never get back, dumbest thing ever, however, when a TV station started to promote Porlandia in my country I found it appealing, I thought maybe that show isn't that bad... SOOOOOOO WROOOOOOOOOOONG I saw the first episode, the worst spent 30 minutes in my life, ever, so boring, hard to believe since I loved Fred Armisen in SNL... so, this time, I like the IFC page, watched video, and unliked it...

What is the big deal? these aren't the only two way of promoting the album... what about the picture reveals, the vine videos, the vignettes, how about the 2 songs and videos released before the album become available? what about the fall tour? isn't it the best way to promote the album?
... I am not in the business of being liked anymore ...

I just think that the "LIKE if you are excited with the new album" is a little bit too much.. but hey.. that's just my opinion :) I will not hate Pearl Jam for that!!! They are and have always been my life! But maybe next time I will keep my thoughts to myself :)

Yeah, sorry I kinda jumped on you, it wasn't my intention. I just think there is so many amazing things coming up in just a few days now in PJ land and we shouldn't let little things like that get in the way of our happiness/excitement.

You shouldn't keep your opinion to yourself, this is the place to share it, I only read your post, the first one, the one I quoted, if you added more to you opinion, i didn't read it...

And I started my post with "I agree", but it seems you were disappointed about this, I was just "meh", I use facebook, it comes handy at times, but fucking hate it, glad to see there are lots of people who don't even have an account... to round up, I welcome your opinion about not liking those 2 specific situations, I'd appreciate you welcome mine about "not paying too much attention to that and don't give that much credit to it", specially when you really like the others, kinda the glass was more than half full this time...
