Why PJ not trying to make "another" Ten is a good thing.
I've got friends who are the type of Pearl Jam listeners where they only like Ten, Vs., and maybe half the stuff on Vitalogy. But after that they move on to something else. They don't understand why I love the rest of Pearl Jam's catalog so much and why I have such devotion to everything they've released. Recently my friend was talking to me about how he heard "Mind Your Manners" on our local rock radio station and how it didn't sound anything like their old stuff.
Here is why it is the smart thing to do for Pearl Jam to never try and emulate the "Ten" sound for another record:
If you listen to older bands nowadays who keep releasing new material every few years, they keep trying to keep the sound that they had when they first started recording as a younger band. Sometimes that isn't necessarily a good move to make. Take KISS for example. With Sonic Boom and their recent release Monster, they try to hard to push that stadium power type sound and it comes off too cheesy (although KISS in itself is sort of cheesy). Imagine if Pearl Jam tried to record a new album with the intention of it sounding like Ten. It would be very arena rock heavy. Do we really want Pearl Jam to try that? Eddie's voice is still top notch, but not end-of-Black top notch. I personally love how every new PJ release is a departure from their previous.

i don't think anyone wants them to try to make another ten. i think most people want them to take a certain mentality into the studio. the same mentality they took to the studio for no code, yield and binaural. just trying to push their boundaries and do something special, different and ambitious.
i think that's why a lot of people have a problem with backspacer. although there were a couple of points during the record where they tried something different, you can't really say that any of it was very ambitious and i really don't believe there is one special song on that record.i have a paper here that entitles me to fast track status0 -
Tell me how Backspacer isn't ambitious? Solid pop rock record with simple themes & unlike any previous effort IMO.www.cluthelee.com0
