There's 3 songs that I've wanted to hear but elude me:
Breathe, Oceans, and Sonic Reducer.
Yes I've seen plenty of songs that are on other peoples lists. I think it gets harder with every album. PJ plays 30 songs a night and has a catalog of a few hundred songs they can play. The odds of hearing my hold grails seem to diminish with every tour.
On the other hand when you read up on how they do setlists, they look at past setlists for the city to try not to duplicate too much.
I've seen crown of thorns 4 or 5 times now (because they frequently play it at northwest shows).. I've even seen brother and dirty frank... but I can't get these 3
On the other hand when you read up on how they do setlists, they look at past setlists for the city to try not to duplicate too much.
Hmmm, yes. But there is also a flip-side. IF the previous show in that city was a success, then the next one is likely to have the same opener.
Example1: Berlin-10. Epic show. Long Road opener. In 2012, first day opener is also Long Road.
Example2: Buenos Aires-11. Epic*epic show. Opener Release. 2013, Bammm. Again, Release is opener.
I got Oceans in Berlin, last year. God knows what will we get next year, Euro-14 tour. One thing I know, for sure is; I am not starting a Please Play thread here.

That's a reach. Release tends to open a lot of their bigger shows it seems. Odds are one of the NYC shows will have it. But other than that it does not happen all that often.

I went to the Manchester shows last year hoping to get Release, Deep, Oceans and Garden to complete Ten. I got Release on night 1 and Deep on night 2 (played in Europe for the first time since '93). Garden was left off the original setlist for night 2 and I'm sure it'll come but Oceans is a very faint hope. You just never know with PJ, they have had it in the setlist mid-set a couple of times since 09 so they are full of surprises which I guess is their magic. I'd trade never hearing it though in favour of hearing some more Binaural/Riot Act songs which are becoming as rare as hens teeth... :(
Like a book among the many on a shelf...
Dublin 02 Arena - 22/6/10. Belfast Odyssey Arena - 23/6/10. London Hyde Park - 25/6/10. Berlin Wuhlheide - 30/6/10.
Manchester MEN - 20/06/12. Manchester MEN - 21/06/12
Yup, I've never heard it, either. I swore they played it at the Chicago Stadium in 94, but I went back and looked at the setlist, and it was never played. I'm 0 for my life.

I dont quite get what you mean but as for Release, it's been played 133 times, corresponds to smtg like 14% of shows.
So Probability of Release being played in 2 consecutive shows is around 2% only. So I assume, it was a conscious choice by the band to play Release in 2013 after 2011.
I am sure my first example, Long Road will give similar probability results.

My point is that if a show is great, I don't think the likelihood of it having the same opener as the last one for the same reason is true.
What I said about Release is that it tends to open a lot of their biggest shows. It has been played in NYC many times as a show opener. It has opened a lot of their great shows.

I'm 1 for 54 with Oceans..Great Opener Only got a chance to Witness it was 9-8-98....It was on the Toronto Night 2 (9-12-11) Setlist But not played..would love to see again

I'd say Boston (Mansfield) is more of a consistent Release opener than NYC.

Last year on pensacola beach at deluna fest, they opened with oceans, we were a few feet away from pj and a few more feet away from the gulf of mexico, and of course those feet were in the sand. epic/amazing/once in a lifetime/unforgettable/almost unimaginable. thank you for that.
It took me until show #30 to see release open a show. I did see it once before at bonnaroo in the second encore.
I am 2-30 with Oceans. Saw it my second show in Houston 2000, and again in Berlin 2012.
My theory on why this song doesn't get played more often...
In the early days, at the end of the song says "Oooohhhh Beth" quite a few times...(you can hear this on unplugged, live in Boston 94, and just about all early performances of the song)
Now when the song is played, that part is changed. He doesn't sing the ooh Beth part... He just sings ooohhh oohhh...
So, IMO, that has to factor in somewhat as to why its not chosen to be played more often... Seeing as now eddie isn't married to Beth..
