    I enjoyed the comment at the end of the article
    that it wasn't about saving the kitten,
    but TRYING to save the kitten.

    It's about the strength of character that sets certain people
    above others.
    It's that voice inside the firefighter that said this wretched kitten
    was worth the effort to save.
    It's like people that seek out ashtrays rather than
    tossing butts on the sidewalk.
    Or like people who help kids build sandcastles
    knowing full well the tide will wreck them eventually.

    That's why we try to save kittens-
    to remind ourselves that even hopeless causes
    are sometimes worth fight for.

    Man, I was sad after reading that the kitten died.

    But the above is a wonderful take on it. And the comments you posted beyong the initial "trying" part - were they yours or the commenter you quoted? Either way, beautifully said...eloquent and true.
